In the Glass: 2007 Edelzwicker
2007, Edelzwicker, Domaine Stoeffler, Barr, Alsace
Pale yellow in the glass, very fresh with aromas of white peach on the nose, a slight spritz of carbon dioxide quickly dissipates, pleasantly fruity, soft textured on the palate, easy drinking, with a slight sweetness lingering on the finish.
Edelzwicker is a traditional, blended wine of Alsace, typically sold in liter bottles. In the early parts of the 20th century, blending was the norm, and these blends were called "zwicker". Edelzwicker (noble-blend) is a "zwicker" made only from grapes considered to be noble. It is a fairly simple wine for day to day drinking, best in a wine brasserie to wash down a plate of chacroute garni at lunchtime!
Because of the wide variety of grapes which may be used (Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, Muscat, Gewurztraminer) one producer's Edelzwicker may taste very different from the next. Quality can vary just as much as with any other category of wine. For most producers it is a very pleasant entry level wine, as this Domaine Stoeffler wine is. It is Euro 5 ex winery.
