Over the past couple of years, I have regularly dropped by the Grand Cru Wine Bistro (Weinrestaurant) in Frankfurt’s Sachsenhausen district, whenever I was in Frankfurt. There is perhaps a handful of brasserie/bistro typ restaurants with a strong wine menu in Frankfurt am Main. Kai Buhrfeindt’s Grand Cru is one of them. The excellent food, the large, well choosen and ever changing wine list – with about 300 wines by the bottle and by the glass - and the French brasserie/bistro atmosphere of Grand Cru always bring back fond memories of the 3 years which I spent in Paris. The expertise and the passion for wine and food of owner Kai Buhrfeindt – a Staatlich gepruefte Weinnase (a government certified wine nose) - shows clearly and everywhere at Grand Cru.
My fellow wine bloggers drunkenmonday and the blind tasting club reviewed Grand Cru recently on their blogs and gave it very high scores. I have not yet reviewed it on schiller-wine, but wrote about a wine tasting at Premier Cru in Frankfurt here. At the time, Premier Cru was the little sister of Grand Cru. In the meantime, it has became the Brasserie du Sud, but has remained one of my favorite wine bistros in Frankfurt am Main. Brasserie du Sud, in addition to a more formal dining area and a great deck area, has a nice and large bar area, where you can just have a little bite with a “ballon de rouge”. One of its additional advantages, as far as I am concerned, is its proximity to Paris Bar and Café, a charming, but small place owned and run by Paris Kosmidis, a film maker, author and journalist from Greece, which easily gets crowded on a busy day.
Kai Buhrfeindt’s Wineblog Recommendations Include schiller-wine
I receive Kai Buhrfeindt’s regular news letters and read them with interest. The last one, I found in particular interesting. Kai revealed that he is quite active in the blog scene, as a reader, not as a blogger. He is following a number of wine blogs and recommended 4 blogs. I was thrilled to see my “schiller-wine” among the 4 wine blogs he recommended. Thank you very much, Kai. I felt very honored.
www.drunkenmonday.com – the blog of a group of wine enthusiast from the town of Giessen, north of Frankfurt; a popular German wine blog, currently #8 in the Wikio ranking.
www.wuertz-wein.de – the blog of winemaker and web 2.0 guru Dirk Wuertz; Dirk produces top notch wine of which most of it is sold in the US; see here; he is also among the leaders of the German web 2.0 wine scene; his wine blog is currently # 1 in the Wikio ranking; I recently participated in the Twitter Wine Awards tasting at the Kaiserstuhl, organized by Dirk; he also produces regular wine shows on the internet, kind of talk shows with prominent people from the wine industry (100 Grad Oechsle).
www.tvino.de – the video blog of Hendrik Thoma and HAWESKO, Germany’s largest wine retailer; Hendrik used to work full time as one of Germany’s top sommeliers and has now become a free-lance wine journalist and virtual sommelier; some call him the German Gary Vaynerchuck; his wine videos, where he tastes a couple of wines – by himself or with a guest - are fun to watch; I have participated as a guest in the production of 3 wine videos and have interviewed Hendrik via Skype.

Unkommerzieller Blog, den 10 Weinfreunde aus einer monatlichen Sitzung entwickelten und sich nun im sehr professionellen Gewand präsentiert. Koryphäen wie z. B. Jancis Robinson (Master of Wine!) haben in diesem unterhaltsamen Interview ihren „Senf“ zum Thema Wein abgegeben. Accesoires wie der Bosch- Akku bottle opener werden getestet – einfach unterhaltsam, gleichzeitig aber auch sehr profund!

Donnerstag, den 26. Mai – Brothers in Arms Wir haben zwei Winzer, welche durch bestechende Weine auf sich aufmerksam gemacht haben. Traditionshaus Spreitzer aus Oestrich im Rheingau ist bereits zum 3. Mal bei uns – wir freuen uns auf das Wiedersehen und famose Rieslinge! Newcomer Rings aus Freinsheim in der Pfalz hat innerhalb von wenigen Jahren von 0 auf 100 aufgedreht und aus einem Obst und Fassweingut eine echte Perle gemacht! Nun fragt Ihr Euch – warum Brothers in arms? Was hat das mit den Dire Straits zu tun? Ganz einfach: Beide Weingüter werden von Brüdern geführt…. ;-)
