Pictures: Cellar Visit and Tasting at Weingut Wegeler in Oestrich-Winkel, Rheingau - Germany-North Tour 2019 by
Weingüter Wegeler is comprised of 2 estates, one in Oestrich-Winkel (Rheingau) and one in Bernkastel (Mosel).
We visited the former. Following a cellar tour, we sat down for a most interesting tasting, including some older wines.

Weingut Wegeler/ Bernkastel (Mosel)
The Bernkastel Estate was founded by Julius Wegeler in the year 1900. In 1902 and 1903, after having bought a large part of the legendary site 'Bernkasteler Doctor', he had a press house built in the village of Cues on the outskirts of Bernkastel that was designed to use the principle of gravitation. This is based in the concept of processing the grapes on three different levels. Driven by natural gravitation, the wines are allowed to run through the individual manufacturing steps at their own weigth and velocity, to the largest extent free of intervention by pumping, siphoning or any other physical strain. Even today, in the 21st century, this procedure is considered State-Of-The-Art technology.

Weingut Wegeler/ Oestrich Winkel (Rheingau)
Weingut Wegeler: The history of the Wegeler Estates is closely linked with the history of Riesling. After Geheimrat Julius Wegeler married a Deinhard daughter and after her father August surprisingly died, Wegeler - until then responsible for the export business of the famous sparkling wine producers - was put in charge of the company. The business flourished and therefore in 1882 the decision was taken to purchase a wine-growing estate in the Rheingau. The vineyards in Rüdesheim and Oestrich-Winkel are still owned by the familiy - the same applies to the manor. The vineyards belonging to our Rheingau Estate cover an area of 45 hectares. Over a length of 20 kilometers, they stretch along the river Rhine that weaves through the Rheingau on its way to the north.

Weingut Wegeler/ Oestrich Winkel (Rheingau) - VDP
VDP: The historical wine estate with its picturesque courtyard is located in the heart of Oestrich. Today’s proprietors, the Wegeler-Drieseberg family, cultivate 44 hectares (ca. 109 acres) of vines in the finest sites between Rüdesheim and Geisenheim. The estate is dedicated 100% to Riesling. Its ambitious goal is to produce dry and lusciouly sweet wines of international standing. One of its banner wines is “Geheimrat J”, vinified as a dry Spätlese as well as a brut sparkling wine. They number among the region’s finest growths. In some years, the lusciously sweet Rieslings are also exemplary of the best the Rheingau has to offer.

The vineyard site Geisenheimer Rothenberg is famous for its highly concentrated noble sweet rarities. In 2007 this vineyard site produced a premium Trockenbeerenauslese with 312° oechsle, the highest value achieved in Germany in this vintage. The Geisenheimer Rothenberg was first mentioned in 1145 by the nobleman Ruthard de Rothenberch. The naming either means "Rodenberg" in the sense of "roden", i.e. land clearing, or it refers to the red colouring of the soil. On the mountain, there is a cross made of sandstone, which was built by Count of the Empire Friedrich von Ingelheim in 1808. Its inscription says " Following old legends, there used to be mill, powered by the wind, where now these vines are".
