The new Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland – for 2020 – was published on November 5, 2019. It reviews on about 1000 pages more than 11.500 wines of 1078 wineries. Its rating symbol is a grape and Germany’s best winemakers are awarded one to five grapes.

Winemaker of the Year: Mathieu Kauffmann
Gault Millau: For Winemaker of the Year, the editors chose the Alsatian Mathieu Kauffmann. A small sensation, because for the first time this award is not linked to a winery. Kauffmann, long cellar master at the champagne house Bollinger, was the winemaker at Weingut Reichsrat von Buhl in the Pfalz for six years, before the paths in the summer 2019 suddenly parted. "Mathieu Kauffmann's courageous handwriting will have a long-lasting impact on wine making in Germany", the Gault & Millau team is convinced. "He bets uncompromisingly on terroir and longevity and gives the Riesling such a striking face. With an experienced view from the outside he brings back to memory, what is in this noble grape variety if you let outstanding vineyards speak for themselves."

Rising Star of the Year: Matthias and Philipp Corvers, Weingut Corvers-Kauter, Rheingau
Gault Millau: For Rising Star of the Year, the editors chose Weingut Corvers-Kauter in Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau: "Unstoppable, that's Matthias and Philipp Corvers! Within a short time they have catapulted themselves to the top of the Rheingau." The sudden doubling of the vinyard area has encouraged the father-son duo even more. "The upward trend has manifested itself in rising valuations in the Gault & Millau during the past three years now. In the past year the family then acquired 15 hectares of prime vineyards through long-term leases from the portfolio of Weingut Langwerth of Simmern, one of the most traditional houses of the Rheingau, and mastered the expansion with flying colors. This year, the Gault & Millau team award four of five grapes.

Discovery of the Year: Philipp Kettern and Daniel Niepoort, Fio Wines, Mosel
Gault Millau: The discovery of the year - this year a duo - comes from the Mosel. Philipp Kettern and Daniel Niepoort are the names of the two young shooting stars who convinced the Gault & Millau team with their project Fio Wines. The idea: to make Riesling, as it used to be, spontaneously fermented, with a long time on the yeast, aged in large barrels and with only a touch of sulphur shortly before filling. A recipe that worked. "Back to the future: Based on old methods, Philipp Kettern and Daniel Niepoort make radically modern Mosel-Rieslings. Sip after sip a discovery!" the editors say. In the Gault & Millau WeinGuide 2020, the two received three red grapes.
