A Weekend in Warendorf, Westphalia, Germany (July 2025)





Annette and I spent a weekend in Warendorf. Annette was borne and grew up in Warendorf. 

Hotel im Engel

We stayed at Hotel im Engel, a 300-year old hotel run by the Leve family till today. It is a few blocks away from the house where Annette grew up.   






Porten 

We had dinner at Porten, where my late father-in-law used to have his Sunday 11:00 Schoppen after church and before lunch at home and where Annette Schiller used to hang out. The Leve family has been owning the place for centuries. We had, of course, Pils, the dominant beer type in the region, in a 0.2 flute with a 5cm head.

Almost as good as the one my mother-in-law used to bake. 

Schweinemett mit Zwiebeln/ Onion Mett

Schweinemett mit Zwiebeln is a preparation of minced raw pork seasoned with salt and black pepper that is popular in Germany. Typically, it is spread on halves of a bread roll, with raw onion on top.

I had 6 halves of a roll for breakfast.
