Pizza at the 32nd best Pizza Maker in the USA: A Modo Mio in Arlington, Virginia (Top 50 Pizza USA)

A Modo Mio: A Modo Mio embraces the classic Neapolitan methods of preparing and cooking pizza, which is now recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. We use a custom made, hand built brick oven from Italy which is VERACE approved. We also share great pride in working with our master pizza chef, Antonio Biglietto, from Naples, Italy. 

A Modo Mio

A Modo mio: In 1970, my family and I left our Sicilian hometown of Agrigento, Italy and settled in New York to pursue the American dream. With little money and hard work, we learned the art of making New York-style pizza.

Then, we confirmed that America truly is the land of opportunity when we moved to Virginia and opened the first Joe's Place in Bailey's Crossroads in 1978. With ongoing success, we opened additional restaurants, and in 2007 consolidated our operations in the Arlington and Vienna locations so that our family members could remain closely involved at each restaurant, and ensure the superior customer service we proudly provide each day.

Over time, we've developed a reputation for the best Neapolitan pizza in town, along with a warm, friendly atmosphere and strong support for the community. Many of our staff have been with us for 10, 20, even 30 years. They and our many longtime regular customers truly are like family.

Most importantly now, with our Chef Antonio we continue to make real Neapolitan pizza, pasta dishes, sauces, and desserts with recipes we brought from Italy, and through all we have learned in this great country. Our food is prepared with love and care to be healthful and delicious.

At a Modo Mio, you'll find that our menu is made up of homemade recipes straight from our family's recipe book back in Italy. We've created an authentic Italian dining experience right here in Arlington – no need to travel all the way to Italy!

One taste of the Margherita pizza at A Modo Mio, with its puffy, charred crust, wisps of fresh basil and soupy center of buffalo mozzarella cheese and San Marzano tomato sauce, and it’s easy to understand why the Arlington pizzeria was named one of 2023’s 50 best in the U.S. by 50 Top Pizza, an Italian guide that annually ranks the world’s best pies. 

A Modo Mio, which means “in my fashion,” opened in October 2020 as a rebranding of Joe’s Place Pizza and Pasta, an Italian restaurant known for its pasta and salad buffet that had operated in the same space on Langston Boulevard since 1985. The pandemic necessitated a pivot away from the buffet model, so the owners—McLean resident Rosario Farruggio and his brother, Vincenzo—decided to emulate Il Canale, the full-service restaurant their uncle, Joe Farruggio, opened in Georgetown in 2010. 

They acquired a liquor license, added a bar to the space (which seats 130 inside and 24 outside) and welcomed Falls Church resident Antonio Biglietto, who served as Il Canale’s chef and pizzaiolo from 2010 to 2014, as a partner.

Biglietto imported a pizza oven from Italy and had his pies certified as Vera Pizza Napoletana, an Italian designation of authenticity awarded to pizzerias adhering to strict Neapolitan tradition. To achieve VPN certification, pizzas must be cooked in 90 seconds or less in an 800- to 900-degree oven using only certain types of (mostly) Italian ingredients. 

50 Top Pizza USA 

Una Pizza Napoletana, in New York, is the best pizzeria in the United States of America for the year 2025. This is the result according to the most influential guide in the world of pizza, 50 Top Pizza. It was announced yesterday at the West Edge, inside the Chelsea Market in New York during the popular ceremony that was broadcast live on the network’s social channels. The award ceremony was presented by Scott Wiener, creator and founder of Scott’s Pizza Tours.

For the third time, Anthony Mangieri‘s pizzeria confirms itself as a true benchmark for quality pizza in America. Second place goes to Pizzeria Sei, in Los Angeles, run by the very talented William Joo. In third place is a legend of American pizza: Tony Gemignani with his Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco.

In fourth place we find Jay’s, in Kenmore, owned by Joe Powers, followed by Ribalta in New York, owned by Rosario Procino and Pasquale Cozzolino. Sixth place goes to Robert’s in Chicago, owned by Robert Garvey, while in seventh place we find Don Antonio, in New York, owned by Giorgia Caporuscio.

In eighth place we have Ken’s Artisan Pizza, in Portland, founded by Ken Forkish. Ninth place goes to Truly Pizza in Dana Point, by Chris Decker. In tenth place we have a tie with La Leggenda, by Giovanni Gagliardi, and ‘O Munaciello by pizza chef Carmine Candito, both in Miami.

After last year’s great success, the 2025 ranking of the Best Pizza Slice in the Country has also been released, and this year it includes the best fourteen. First place goes to L’industrie Pizzeria in New York, by Massimo Laveglia and Nick Baglivo. In second place we have Slice & Pie in Washington, by pizza chef Giulio Adriani, and third place goes to Taglio in Mineola, by Rob Cervoni.

The entire guide USA 2025, which also includes the “Excellent Pizzerias” section, includes 99 pizzerias. The most represented city in the guide is New York with 20 pizzerias, followed by Chicago and Portland with 6 pizzerias each.

Year after year we are noticing changes in pizzerias across the United States – say the three curators of 50 Top Pizza, Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Saperethat have led to increasingly interesting ideas and that are good for the entire industry. We would also like to mention that the different styles of pizza that our inspectors get to enjoy are also getting more mumerous, this is a good thing because it creates a wider variety for the customer”.

The event ended at La Devozione NYC with an informal party that welcomed guests from all over the United States.

The top 12 positions in the 50 Top Pizza USA 2025 ranking along with the top 3 positions in the 50 Top Pizza Slice USA 2025 ranking will automatically be included in the 100 Best Pizzerias in the World ranking. The winners will gather at the Teatro Mercadante in Naples on September 8th, for the 50 Top Pizza World 2025 awards ceremony.

The next 50 Top Pizza event is scheduled for July 15th with the presentation of the guide 50 Top Pizza Italia 2025 at the Teatro Manzoni in Milan.
