As part of a visit to the USA of a German delegation headed by Alois Rainer, Federal Minister of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identy, German Ambassador Jens Hanefeld invited to a reception in honor of the Minister at the Ambassador's Residence. Annette and I were happy to be among the guests.
Sponsored by the Deutsche Weininstitut, the guests were offered an outstanding selection of 10 German wines - dry white, red, sparkling and no-alcohol. The Deutsche Weinistitut had hired Brent Kroll, a highly respected sommelier and owner of Maxwell Park Wine Bar in Washington DC, to pour the wines.
Following introductory remarks of the German Ambassador Jens Hanefeld and Minister of Agriculture, Alois Rainer, Melanie Broyé-Engelkes, Managing Director, Deutsches Weininstitut, Germany, introduced the wine selection to the guests and spoke about what wine producer Germany has to offer. Melanie Broyé-Engelkes has only been a few months at the helm of the Deutsches Weininstitut and I believe this was her first visit to the USA as Managing Director of the Deutsche Weininstitut.
I was very pleasured to see a broad selection of excellent German wines being poured at the reception and a Washington DC star sommelier pouring the wines. Interestingly, the wine selection was not dominated by the Kabinett, Spaetlese, Auslese sweetness ladder, but essentially all wines were dry, and included 2 red wines, 2 sparkling wines and 2 non-alcoholic wines.
Annette enjoyed talking to Jan-Hendrik Mohr, CEO, CLAAS Group, Germany, a leading manufacturer of agricultural engineering equipment. It is a family-owned business headquartered in Harsewinkel, Germany, founded in 1913 by August Claas, with around 12,000 employees worldwide. We got married in Harsewinkel.
Annette and I were happy to see Antje Frehse again, Ministerialdirektorin, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identy, Germany. She had spent some time at the Embassy in Washington and was very helpful in terms of organizing wine events at the Embassy before being called back to headquarters in Berlin, where she is now head of the International Departmen.
Finally, it is always a pleasure to talk to Jean P. Froehly, Minister, Head of Economic and Financial Affairs, German Embassy in the USA (and distinguished jazz musician).
Presenting German Wine in the USA
Recently, there were 2 events where a similar selection of German wines was presented, at the German Embassy and at the National Conference of the American Wine Society, both with active involvement of Annette and Christian Schiller.
Sponsored by the Deutsche Weininstitut, the guests were offered an outstanding selection of 10 German wines - white, red, sparkling and no-alcohol. The Deutsche Weinistitut had hired Brent Kroll, a highly respected sommelier and owner of Maxwell Park Wine Bar in Washington DC, to pour the wines.
