Piedmont is, following Tuscany earlier this year and Alto Adige later this month, the next Italian wine region on the "to do list" of Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours / Annette Schiller (in 2027 or 2028).
Piedmont (Piemonte) in northwest Italy is a world-renowned wine region famous for full-bodied red wines like Barolo and Barbaresco, crisp whites like Gavi, and sweet sparkling Moscato d'Asti. Its name means "foot of the mountains", as vineyards thrive in the foggy, sun-drenched foothills of the Alps.
Nebbiolo: The king of Piedmont reds. It yields iconic, long-lived, highly tannic wines like Barolo and Barbaresco with notes of cherry, rose, and tar.
Barbera: A popular red grape providing juicy acidity, dark cherry fruit, and low tannin, famous as Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba.
Dolcetto: An early-ripening red grape yielding soft, fruit-forward, everyday drinking wines with a pleasant bitter-almond finish.
Cortese (Gavi): A dry, crisp white wine with bright citrus and mineral flavors.
Arneis: A rich, textured white from Roero carrying notes of pear and apricot.
Moscato Bianco: The aromatic grape behind sweet, gently sparkling Moscato d'Asti.
Langhe: The premier hilly territory south of the Tanaro River in Cuneo province. Home to Alba, Barolo, and Barbaresco.
Roero: Located just across the river from the Langhe, noted for sandy soils and aromatic whites alongside lighter reds. Known for Arneis and lighter Nebbiolo.
Monferrato: A vast expanse spanning Asti and Alessandria. Famous for Barbera and sparkling wine production.
Alto Piemonte: The northern alpine foothills specializing in food-friendly Nebbiolo blends (locally called Spanna) like Ghemme and Gattinara.
Alba: The cultural and commercial heart of the Langhe, famous for both wines and white truffles.
Barolo: The tiny, picturesque village that gives its name to Italy’s legendary "King of Wines".
La Morra: A prominent ridge-top village known for producing more elegant, perfumed styles of Barolo.
Serralunga d'Alba: A dramatic castle-crowned town crafting structured, powerful, and long-lived Barolos.
Barbaresco: The scenic riverside village central to the production of refined Nebbiolo.
Asti: A major hub famous for sweet Moscato d'Asti and sparkling Asti Spumante.
Acqui Terme: A historic spa town famous for sweet, aromatic red Brachetto d'Acqui.
Gavi: A southern town serving as the epicenter for crisp white Gavi production.

Moscato d'Asti, Asti Spumante, Asti Spumante Metodo
Classico
These are three distinct styles of Italian sparkling wine made from the Moscato Bianco (White Muscat) grape in the Piedmont region. While they share the same grape and geographic origin, they differ significantly in bubbles, alcohol content, and production methods.
Moscato d'Asti
This is the most famous, delicate, and artisanal style of the three.
The Bubbles: Frizzante (lightly sparkling). It has lower bottle pressure, resulting in soft, gentle bubbles.
Alcohol: Very low, usually around 5.5% ABV.
Flavor Profile: Intensely aromatic, sweet, and fresh. It tastes of fresh peaches, orange blossoms, and sage.
Production: Fermented in large, pressurized steel tanks (Charmat/Martinotti method). Fermentation is stopped early by chilling the wine. This leaves a lot of natural grape sugar unfermented, keeping it sweet and low in alcohol. It is corked with a standard straight cork and a metal clip.
Asti Spumante
Often referred to simply as "Asti," this is a fully sparkling wine made for broader commercial distribution.
The Bubbles: Spumante (fully sparkling). It has high pressure, creating a loud pop when opened and aggressive, long-lasting bubbles.
Alcohol: Higher than Moscato d'Asti, usually between 7% and 9% ABV.
Flavor Profile: Sweet, fruity, and highly refreshing, though generally less complex and less aromatic than Moscato d'Asti.
Production: Fermented in large, pressurized steel tanks (Charmat/Martinotti method). The fermentation goes further than Moscato d'Asti, converting more sugar into alcohol and CO2 gas. It is sealed with a traditional mushroom cork and wire cage.
Asti Spumante Metodo Classico
This is a premium, rare, and modern adaptation of the region's sparkling wine heritage.
The Bubbles: Spumante (fully sparkling) with very fine, persistent bubbles.
Alcohol: Much higher, usually 11% to 12% ABV.
Flavor Profile: Unlike the other two, this style is usually dry (Pas Dosé, Brut, or Extra Brut). It combines the floral aromas of the Moscato grape with complex, savory notes of toasted bread, yeast, and brioche.
Production: Made using the Traditional Method (Metodo Classico), the same process used for Champagne. The second fermentation happens inside the individual bottle, and the wine spends a mandatory minimum of 9 months aging on its yeast sediment (lees).
