I have written about my favorite wine spots in Vienna. The small Vis-a-Vis in a passageway between Bäckerstrasse and Wollzeile, opposite Figlmueller Beisl, is one of them. Vis-a-Vis is a Viennese wine bar pioneer, as it was the first to offer a large selection of wines by the glass … and in Riedel glasses.
The Place
The first time I went there I did not notice it and walked by the tiny, unpretentious bar, which has become a long-established favorite with locals. It may only seat close to 12 people inside and perhaps 6 outside in the passageway.

The owner - wine freak Hans Weibel - was an early champion of cultivated wine-drinking in Vienna and in the beginning behind the bar of Vis-a-Vis, serving the wines. He has since expanded his business with two excellent restaurants: the traditional wood-paneled Weibel's Wirtshaus and the more modern Wein in the City, both with inexhaustible cellars and lusty Backhuhn (fried chicken) and Tafelspitz (boiled beef) on their menus.
The Food
The food served is Heurigen-style, with delicious little snacks and antipasti. If you want Wiener Schnitzel, you have to go to Weibel's Wirtshaus, ... or Figlmueller, vis a vis.

The Wines
Vis a Vis offers over 300 wines, both domestic and international, with a strong emphasis on the former. It is also a good place to discover talented Austrian newcomers.
