In its September 30, 2026 issue, the Wine Spectator published a feature entitled "Six Contemporary German Winemakers to Know", highlighting a new generation of producers shaping modern expressions of Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Blanc". Annette Schiller Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours and I know all of them quite well, except for one, Philipp Lucas of @Weingut Lucashof in the Pfalz.

Yesterday, Annette and I had the pleasure of getting to know Philipp at Brut Wine Bar in Alexandria, where he presented his ##worlclass wines to a group of interested winelovers. A most enjoyable evening and I am sure we see each other soon again, either here in Washington DC at a tasting of the German Wine Society - Washington DC or the American Wine Society or in Germany during Germany/ Alsace/ Switzerland 2027 by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours

The Six Contemporary German Winemakers to Know (Wine Spectator)

Andreas Spreitzer (Weingut Josef Spreitzer – Rheingau): Known for seeking purity, precision, and tight balance in his regional Rieslings.

Niklas and Lara Haag (Weingut Schloss Lieser – Mosel): Representing a continuing legacy in the heart of the Mosel Valley.

Oliver Haag (Weingut Fritz Haag – Central Mosel): Serving as a key benchmark producer for the central Mosel region.

Philipp Lucas (Weingut Lucashof – Pfalz): Refining a delicate, elegant, and low-intervention style of Pfalz Riesling from prominent sites like Forster Pechstein.

Hans and Valentin Rebholz (Ökonomierat Rebholz – Pfalz): Representing the next generation of this historic estate with a commitment to dry, terroir-driven wines.

Vive le Champagne!

Weingut Lucashof (HB Wine Merchants)

Owned by Christine Lucas, sister to Nik Weis, this estate produces outstanding Riesling from important vineyard sites in the Pfalz. This estate was established over 50 years ago and has a much warmer climate than the Mosel with different soil. The resulting wines tend to be drier in style with a little bit higher alcohol levels. Located in the Rhine valley and protected to the North and the West by the Hunsrueck Mountains. That\'s what makes the climate there almost Mediterranean. The soil is heavier and less stony than in the Mosel. They don\'t have slate like in the Mosel, they have volcanic, glacial and river sediments. That\'s why the wines are not as mineral but due to the warmer climate more full bodied than the wines in the Mosel. In general they have less acidity and more of a roundness. The flavors of their Rieslings are more on the peachy side than on the grapefruit side.
