3 Days at Fattoria e Villa di Rignana in the Chianti Classico Region (Tuscany) - Wine Country Italy (Lake Como, Tuscany, Alto Adige) in 2025











From June 16 to July 3, 2025, Annette and I spent time in wine country Italy, by car.

Third Stop: Chianti Classico (Tuscany)

From Bolgheri we drove to Chianti Classico and stayed 3 nights at Fattoria e Villa di Rignana. 

On the arrival day, we went to the pool and had dinner at La Cantinetta di Rignana. 

On the second day, we visited Greve and several Chianti Classico estates. The day ended with dinner again at La Cantinetta di Rignana.

On the third day, we started with an extensive winery visit at our hotel, at Fattoria di Rignana, with owner and winemaker Cosimo Gericke, followed by visits of more wineries in the Chianti Classico region. For dinner, as La Cantinetta di Rignana was closed on that day, we went to Locanda di Poggio al Sole, the restaurant of the Poggio al Sole winery, near Fattoria et Villa di Rignana.

Fattoria e Villa di Rignana is a beautiful estate nestled amidst vineyards and olive groves in Panzano, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany, Italy.  The estate is surrounded by 120 hectares of vines, woods and olive groves, all immersed in this sensational area of Tuscany. It offers visitors a blend of history, breathtaking landscapes, wine and olive oil production, accommodations, and a delightful culinary experience. There is a winery (Fattoria di Rignana, hotel rooms in the Fattoria di Rignana and in the Villa di Rignana, and, also on the estate, a lovely restaurant, La Cantinetta di Rignana. 
 
History and Ownership
 
The estate has a rich history dating back to the 11th century, once strategically important and worked by families producing grain, hay, milk, and cheese.
 
Since 1999 Fattoria di Rignana has been owned and run by Cosimo Gericke and Sveva Rocco di Torrepadula, who divorced and split up the estate recently. Cosimo's father, a German, bought the estate in 1965. 
 
Essentially, Cosimo owns and runs the Fattoria, including 8 rooms, and Sveva owns and runs the Villa. We stayed 2 nights at the Villa and 1 night at the Fattoria.  
 
Wine and Olive Oil Production
 
Grapes: Fattoria di Rignana's wines are primarily made from Sangiovese grapes, with a significant proportion also featuring Canaiolo. They also use Merlot and Cabernet Franc for some of their IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) wines.
 
Organic Certification: Since 2014, the winery has been practicing organic farming methods.
 
Wine Range: Beyond their Chianti Classico, Fattoria di Rignana offers a Riserva (aged longer), a Gran Selezione (their top tier from a single vineyard), an IGT red blend ("Il Riccio"), and a white wine made from Sangiovese grapes.
 
 
Fattoria di Rignana produces a highly regarded DOP extra virgin olive oil.
 
Accommodations
 
Fattoria B&B - Features eight double rooms with a classic Tuscan design, offering a comfortable and welcoming stay with private bathrooms.
 
Villa di Rignana - Offers rooms in the historic villa, some beautifully decorated with ceiling frescoes.
 
All accommodations provide a B&B service and access to a large garden and an infinity pool with stunning views of the Chianti hills.
 
Other Options: Guests can also rent two houses on the estate – the Church House and the Stone Cottage – or extra suites in the owner's villa.

Villa de’ Ricci is known in its history as the countryside estate of the noble dè Ricci family, a surname which has a direct legacy with 2 historical figures like Santa Caterina dè Ricci (+1541) and Scipione dè Ricci (+1810), the latter having been the Bishop of Pistoia and Prato and the son of Luisa Ricasoli. The exclusive residence has then been knowingly restored by the current owner Sveva Rocco di Torrepadula, who managed to emphasise the elegant atmosphere, the ground floor rooms with their original frescoes dating IXX century. Il Riccio and Stella, respectively on the ground and first floor of the Villa, will host you in its vast sitting rooms, its welcoming and cozy bedrooms with spacious bathrooms and fully equipped kitchens. We can offer personalised vacations, in double rooms or independent apartments, with the total capacity of 19 people. On the estate you will find a careful and discreet service, a marvellous infinity swimming pool with a breathtaking view on the Chianti hills and an excellent Breakfast with a variety of Tuscan products.

La Cantinetta di Rignana is a family-run restaurant. It is owned and operated by the Abbarchini family. Massimo Abbarchini is the current chef. He inherited the love of cooking from his parents, Paolo Abbarchini and his mother, who started their first restaurant in the 1980s. Massimo works alongside his sons, Lorenzo and Cosimo, ensuring the culinary traditions are passed down through the generations.
