At Isole et Olena Winery, a Major Force behind the Chianti Renaissance in the 1970s - Wine Country Italy (Lake Como, Tuscany, Alto Adige) in 2025

From June 16 to July 3, 2025, Annette and I spent time in wine country Italy, by car.

For an overview of the whole trip, go here: Wine Country Italy - Lake Como, Tuscany, Alto Adige - in the Summer of 2025

Third Stop: Chianti Classico (Tuscany)

From Bolgheri we drove to Chianti Classico and stayed 3 nights at Fattoria e Villa di Rignana.

On the arrival day, we went to the pool and had dinner at La Cantinetta di Rignana.

On the second day, we visited Greve and several Chianti Classico estates. The day ended with dinner again at La Cantinetta di Rignana.

On the third day, we started with an extensive winery visit at our hotel, at Fattoria di Rignana, with owner and winemaker Cosimo Gericke, followed by visits of more wineries in the Chianti Classico region. For dinner, as La Cantinetta di Rignana was closed on that day, we went to Locanda di Poggio al Sole, the restaurant of the Poggio al Sole winery, near Fattoria et Villa di Rignana.

Isole et Olena

We were one of the first to be received in the new tasting room.

Isole et Olena (Google AI based)

Isole e Olena is a renowned winery in the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany, Italy
. It is celebrated for its role in the region's quality renaissance starting in the 1970s and is known for producing high-quality wines, especially its iconic Cepparello.

Founded in 1956 by Francesco De Marchi, the estate was formed by uniting two small hamlets: Isole and Olena.

Located in the western part of Chianti Classico, midway between Florence and Siena in the UGA (Unitá Geografica Aggiuntiva) of San Donato in Poggio.

The vineyards cover 56 hectares (138 acres) at altitudes of 350-450 meters (1,148 – 1,476 feet) above sea level.

Paolo De Marchi, Francesco's son, took over the estate in 1975 and revolutionized the winemaking process, focusing on quality and improving local grape varieties like Sangiovese through massal selection.

Isole e Olena is considered a pioneer in leading the quality resurgence of Chianti Classico.

In 2022, EPI Group acquired Isole e Olena, and Emanuele Reolon became the new director.

Cepparello: The flagship wine and an emblem of Isole e Olena, Cepparello is a 100% Sangiovese wine made from old vines and aged in barrique. It was initially classified as a "vino da tavola" (table wine) and is now a recognized Super Tuscan. The 2020 vintage of Cepparello received high ratings, including 97 points from Vinous and 96 points from Wine Spectator and Robert Parker.

Chianti Classico: Their Chianti Classico is well-regarded and reflects the estate's expertise. It is primarily crafted from Sangiovese grapes, with potential blends of other traditional varietals like Canaiolo and Syrah. The 2021 Chianti Classico received a score of 93 from Robert Parker and Wilfred Wong.

Other Wines: Isole e Olena also produces a range of other wines, including Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the highly acclaimed Vin Santo.

Isole et Olena (wine-searcher)

Isole e Olena is one of the most prominent producers in the Chianti region of Italy. It has been credited with helping revive the quality of Chianti in the 1970s, and its flagship wine – Cepparello – is one of the most famous wines falling under the Super Tuscan designation.

The estate lies within the boundaries of the Chianti Classico DOCG, a few hours' drive south of Florence in western Chianti. It was formed from the purchase and consolidation of two neighboring properties – Isole and Olena – by the De Marchi family in the 1950s.

In the 1970s, Isole e Olena began a push toward quality, and fourth-generation winemaker Paolo de Marchi began to improve viticulture and viniculture techniques to make better wines in smaller quantities.

In 1980, De Marchi released the first vintage of Cepparello, a wine that was then excluded from the title of Chianti Classico as it was 100 percent Sangiovese. It instead was bottled as a Vino da Tavola, or table wine, and joined the ranks of the so-called Super Tuscans, alongside wines like Tignanello and Masseto. These were able to claim the title of Toscana IGT in 1992.

Isole e Olena make several other wines, including a Chianti Classico, a Vin Santo, and a range of wines made from more international varieties like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon under the name Collezione de Marchi. In addition to this, the company makes a Syrah called L'Eremo
