Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, May 28 - Thursday, June 08, 2023. We toured Austria for 12 days, starting and ending in Vienna: Wien, Wagram, Carnuntum, Burgenland, Steiermark, Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wien.
In Carnuntum, we visited one estate: Weingut Franz und Christine Netzl in Göttlesbrunn.
The wines of Weingut Franz und Christine Netzl are widely vailable on the East Coast of the USA, in particular in the greater Washington DC region through Klaus Wittauer (kw.selection.com).
I met Franz and Christine Netzl for the first time in 2010, when they introduced their wines with importer Klaus Wittauer to the American market.

A year later, during the summer of 2011, I went over to Austria for a wedding in the Burgenland; I gave the Netzls a call and they were so nice to invite me over to the Estate. We spent a lovely afternoon together at their winery, which ended on the terrace of the Netzls with a glass of Zweigelt, watching a photo shooting session for the new Netzl catalog.

The tour started in the new tasting room, where Franz and Christina introduced us to the different soils of their vineyards. We toured the wine cellar and went to the vineyard. The visit ended with a seated tasting lead by Franz Netzl.
Weingut Franz und Christine Netzl in Göttlesbrunn, Carnuntum
The
Netzl Estate is located in the small town of Göttlesbrunn in the
Carnuntum. The family winery has been established in 1820 and developed
from a mixed farming estate. Today the winery has 75 acres of vineyards,
a lot of them in top sites such as Aubühel, Bärnreiser, Haidacker,
Holzweg, Kräften and Neuberg.
80% of the vineyards are planted
with red grape varieties while the remaining 20% is planted with the
white varieties Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and
Welschriesling. A bottle-fermented
sparkling wine is also produced. Annual production is around 80.000 bottles of wine.
