Sunday Greetings (March 1, 2026) from ombiasy WineTours/ Annette Schiller - Focus Today: Bordeaux Meets Riesling in Hattenheim, Rheingau, Germany

Dear wine friends,

Today’s Sunday greeting has the slogan: Bordeaux meets Rheingau!

Red Bordeaux wines are among the world’s finest and most cherished wines. It is the art of blending a careful selection of different grape varieties and the meticulous winemaking that creates this unmistakable “Bordeaux” aroma.

The Rheingau is one of Germany’s 13 wine regions and thanks to its phenomenal terroir and geographical situation this region produces some of the world’s best Rieslings of depth, complexity, and utter deliciousness.

This weekend the “Rheingau Wein & Gourmet Festival” took place in Hattenheim, Rheingau. Saturday’s dinner featured wines of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, 2ième Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux and Grosse Gewächs (Grand Cru) and Erste Gewächs (1ière Cru) Riesling of three prominent Riesling producers: Weingut Emrich-Schönleber, Weingut Balthasar Ress, Weingut Johannishof. The wines were perfectly matched by a 5-course dinner prepared by 2-Michelin star chef Thorsten Bender (restaurant “Sein” in Karlsruhe).

Christian and I were seated at the table with Managing Director Nicolas Glumineau of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and the owners/winemakers of the three Riesling estates. It was a dream come true: some of my favorite wines: first class Bordeaux for red and first class Riesling for white, vintages going back 10 years, and an artful interplay of wine and excellent food. The match Bordeaux and Riesling was perfect - two giants of the wine world met in perfect harmony.

Contrary to Bordeaux, German wines in general are still not well understood. To learn more about German wines, I invite you to join me on the wine tour through seven German wine regions, taking place June 28 – July 09, 2026.

During this tour we delve deep into German "Riesling Country" and some classic spots where Pinot Noir has its historical roots. We will visit a total of about 25  wineries in 7 different wine regions:  Rheingau, the jewel in the crown, with its perfect, fuller bodied, racy ieslings; Mittelrhein where the Rieslings grow on the steep slopes of the fortress- and castle-ribboned banks of the Rhine river; Mosel with its dizzying steep vineyards and famous elegant Rieslings grown on slate; Nahe and its serene, peaceful valley where perfect harmonious wines reflect their roots; we pay a visit to one of the up- and coming winemakers in the Rheinhessen region. We explore fantastic Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder in German) along the tiny Ahr river where Pinot Noir grows on steep vineyards clinging to the barren slate rocks and along the Main river in the western part of the Franken wine region where Pinot Noir grows on classic limestone soils.

Should you have any questions concerning this wine tour to Germany, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. I will answer all your queries.

Greetings from sunny Frankfurt, Germany
Annette
