Tuscany - Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Super Tuscans, Maremma, Bolgheri - 2026 by ombiasy Wine Tours, led by Annette Schiller (Summery, June 8-18)

This is a summary posting of the whole tour.

Day -1:

The tour started in Florence. The 14 participants, including Annette and myself, arranged their trip to Florence individually. Annette and I flew from Washington DC to Frankfurt 10 days before the start of the trip and went by train from Frankfurt to Florence 2 days before the trip.

Following a comfortable 10-hour train ride from Frankfurt via Milan we arrived safely in Florence. We were staying at a guest house right in the center of bustling medieval Florence, a stone's throw away from Ponte Vecchio, across the house where Dante used to live. We went out for a walk with the Enoteca Bellini wine bar as final destination where we had Tuscan wine and salumi.

In a recent article, the
Wine Enthusiast hailed Enoteca Bellini as the "to go place" in Florence for wine pros and wine lovers. Annette Schiller and I went there last night and were indeed impressed by the very carefully curated wine selection, which extends well beyond Tuscany and also includes French wines, like Clos Puy Arnaud in Castillion, a biodynamic winemaker we know well from our Bordeaux.

Day 0:

Pre-tour. Full day sightseeing and shopping in Florence.

For dinner, we teamed up with 4 other members of the group.

"One for the road" before returning to the hotel.

DAY 1: Monday, June 08

We met at the bus terminal in Florence.

Tour, Tasting and Lunch at Antinori nel Chianti in Chianti Classico

Few names in wine carry the weight of Antinori. The family's winemaking lineage stretches back to 1385, when they became members of the Winemakers Guild established in 1282 for conducting a wine business, making it one of the oldest wine dynasties in the world. In modern times brothers Piero and Lodovico shaped the Marchesi Antinori wine imperium. Today it is Albiera Antinori, Piero’s daughter, who is the 26th generation at the helm. Their home estate in the Chianti Classico zone is a physical statement of that legacy: the winery building, inaugurated in 2012, is a stunning feat of contemporary architecture carved directly into a hillside, built entirely from local stone and terracotta so that it seems to emerge organically from the Tuscan landscape.

Guided Visit of  Badia A Passignano

The abbey comes with extensive vineyards. Marchesi Antinori produces the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, DOCG, Badia a Passignano wine. The Abbey’s historic underground wine cellar is the ageing place of these wines. Also known as the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo a Passignano, the monastery also houses beautifully restored medieval frescoes by numerous renowned Italian artists, among them the famous “Last Supper” by Domenico Ghirlandaio, the teacher of Michelangelo. Badia a Passigano’s documented existence stretches back to the 890s and was presumably founded by the Lombards. In 1049 the property was donated to the Vallombrosian Order. With the exception of an expulsion in 1866 during the upheavals of the risorgimento, the Vallombrosian Order has run the monastery for almost 1000 years.

Our guide was one of the 4 monks currently living at and managing the monastery.

At Fattoria di Rignana – our home for the next 4 nights - in Greve in the Chianti Classico

Perched on a hilltop ridge between Greve in Chianti and Badia a Passignano, Fattoria di Rignana is the kind of place that makes you understand why people fall in love with Tuscany. The estate has deep historical roots, with its ancient stone farmhouse, medieval tower defining this ridge for centuries. Today it is in the hands of Cosimo Gericke. The garden allows for breathtaking views of the countryside dotted with vineyards and olive trees. The infinity pool offers relaxation and a pure vacation feeling. The estate also hosts the beloved Cantinetta di Rignana restaurant and agriturismo accommodations, making it one of the most complete and authentically Tuscan experiences in the entire zone.

Before dinner, we enjoyed a seated tasting of the wines of Fattoria di Rignana in the vineyard with owner and winemaker Cosimo Gericke.

Dinner at Cantinetta di Rignana

Except for one night, when the Cantinetta was closed we ate there every night we stayed at Fattoria di Rignana.

DAY 2: Tuesday, June 09

Tour and Tasting at Isole E Olena in Chianti Classico.

Founded in 1956 by Francesco De Marchi, Isole e Olena takes its name from two ancient hamlets (Isole and Olena) that were merged into a single estate. The property sits in the western reaches of the Chianti Classico denomination. For decades the estate was shaped by Paolo De Marchi, one of the most respected and influential winemakers of his generation, who helped redefine quality standards across the entire zone. The estate's 138 acres of vineyards range from 900-1500ft above sea level, surrounded by woodlands typical of the Chianti Classico region.

On Day 2 and 3 we were joined by 4 members of the American Wine Society, including the 2 former Presidents al Guber and Bill Stephan..

Tour

Tasting

The Chianti Classico and the legendary pure-Sangiovese IGT Cepparello, released only in the finest vintages, have earned a devoted international following.

Lunch

Antica Trattoria il Guerrino in Greve in Chianti

Tour and Tasting at Fontodi in Chianti Classico, Panzano in Chianti.

Fontodi occupies one of the most coveted addresses in all of Chianti Classico: the Conca d'Oro, or "golden bowl", a natural amphitheater of south-facing vineyards just south of Panzano that traps sunlight and warmth to produce grapes of extraordinary ripeness and complexity. The Manetti family, long established as terracotta craftsmen in nearby Impruneta, acquired the estate in 1968 and set about building one of the benchmark producers of the denomination.

The younger generation stepping inot leadership roles at the winery includes Bernardo Manette, who was our host. His father Giovanni Manetti has been the driving force of the property since the 1980s.

Tour

The estate extends over 321 acres in total, of which approximately 173 acres are planted with vines farmed with full organic certification.

Tasting

Their Flaccianello della Pieve, a pure Sangiovese IGT from a single vineyard, is routinely ranked among Italy's greatest red wines.

Relaxing at Fattoria di Rignana

Tasting and Dinner at Poggio al Sole, Chianti Classico, in Badia a Passignano

Nestled in the hills near the ancient Benedictine abbey of Badia a Passignano, Poggio al Sole, or "hill of the sun", is a boutique estate whose name perfectly captures its character: warm, sun-drenched, and deeply rooted in the pastoral rhythms of the Chianti landscape. Owned by the Davaz family from Switzerland, who fell in love with this corner of Chianti Classico, the estate combines a small but serious wine operation with a charming locanda and restaurant.

DAY 3: Wednesday, June 10

Guided City Tour of San Gimignano

Approaching San Gimignano is an unrealistic, cinematic moment when a hilltop town with its majestic medieval towers suddenly comes into view over the rolling hills of vineyards and olive groves. Known as “the town of towers”, or in more modern language, “Medieval Manhattan”, San Gimignano was for centuries at the cross-roads of competing interests. There was little subsequent modern development and 14 towers still stand today. San Gimignano preserves its medieval character and offers a glance to vividly imagine what living in a long-gone epoch was like.

Tour and Wine-Pairing Lunch at Fattoria Poggio Alloro

Just five kilometers from the medieval towers of San Gimignano, Fattoria Poggio Alloro is a warmly run family estate that embodies the agricultural soul of this UNESCO-listed corner of Tuscany. The estate is one of the most respected producers of Vernaccia di San Gimignano — the ancient white wine that holds the distinction of being the first Italian wine to receive DOC status, in 1966.

Tour and Tasting at Castello di Verrazzano, Chianti Classico, in Greve in Chianti with Owner Luigi Cappellini

Castello di Verrazzano was built in the 7th century and is celebrated above all as the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Florentine explorer who in 1524 became the first European to sail into what is now New York Harbor and lending his name to the famous bridge. Since 1958 the property has been owned by the Cappellini family. Owner Luigi Cappellini joined us for part of the tour.

DAY 4: Thursday, June 11

Tour, Tasting and Lunch at Castello di Volpaia, Chianti Classico, Radda in Chianti

Few wine estates in Tuscany, or anywhere, can match the sheer romance of Volpaia. The winery is embedded within a perfectly preserved medieval fortified village perched at over 1200 ft above sea level on the high ridgeline above Radda in Chianti, making it one of the highest-altitude producers in the entire Chianti Classico zone. The first documents mentioning Volpaia date to 1172, and the hamlet, its cellars ingeniously hidden within ancient stone walls, connected by underground passages, remains beautifully intact. Their Chianti Classico Riserva was the first ever to be ranked among Wine Spectator's Top 3 wines in the world.

Lunch

Tour and Tasting at Querciabella, Chianti Classico, Greve in Chianti

Querciabella occupies a special position in the Chianti Classico landscape: it is one of the zone's most committed biodynamic estates and has been entirely plant-based (vegan) in all aspects of its winemaking since 1988. Founded in 1974 by Sebastiano Castiglioni, the estate was always oriented toward quality over volume. Querciabella farms over 124 acres of prime Chianti Classico vineyards, with an additional 104 acres in Maremma, all managed with an almost philosophical care for soil health and biodiversity, on galestro and alberese soils that deliver aromatic purity and structural precision. The estate's flagship Camartina, a Sangiovese-Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is one of Tuscany's most celebrated Super Tuscans, while the Batàr white (Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco) is arguably Italy's finest white from an otherwise red-dominated zone.

DAY 5: Friday, June 12

We left  Chianti Classico, where we had spent 4 nights, today and drove to Montalcino.

Tour, Tasting and Lunch at Badia a Coltibuono, Chianti Classico, Gaiole in Chianti

Badia a Coltibuono , the "abbey of good cultivation", is one of the most historically resonant estates in all of Tuscany. The property was founded as a Vallombrosan Benedictine monastery in the 11th century, and the monks cultivated vines on these forested hillsides above Gaiole for centuries before the abbey was secularized during the Napoleonic era. In 1846 the estate was acquired by the Stucchi Prinetti family, who have maintained it ever since, bringing winemaking into the modern era while honoring the estate's monastic heritage.

Tasting

Tour and Tasting at Caparzo, Brunello di Montalcino, Montalcino

The estate's origins date to the late 1960s, at the very dawn of Brunello di Montalcino's rise to prominence, when a group of friends purchased an old ruin with vineyards on the slopes of Montalcino. In 1998 the property was acquired by Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini.

At Foresteria Podere Brizio in Montalcino

Our home for the next 4 nights.

Foresteria Podere Brizio in Montalcino is a fabulous historic countryside retreat among the vineyards of Montalcino about ten minutes south of the town of Montalcino. This detailed luxuriously renovated farmhouse sits next to the winery where Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello and Brunello Reserve are produced. In the garden you find well-maintained tennis courts and a secluded pool. Our home for 4 nights.

Dinner at Foresteria Podere Brizio

DAY 6: Saturday, June 13

Tour and Tasting at Icario, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Montepulciano

Perched on the ancient hilltop of Montepulciano, Icario is a boutique estate whose name, drawn from Greek mythology, hints at its ambition to reach the heights of what this historic denomination can produce.

Icario is part of the Dr. Rothenberger Holding, a group of companies that now includes more than 100 operating companies and has 6,000 employees. owned by the Dr. Helmut Rothenberger family. The estate was puchased in 2025 from its founders, the Cecchetti family. The roots of the Dr. Rothenberger Holding is a trading house for tools that was founded Edwin Rothenberger in 1949 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Tour and Wine-tasting lunch at Boscarelli, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Cervognano di Montepulciano

Poderi Boscarelli is one of the standard-bearing estates for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, with a family winemaking history dating to 1962, when Marquis Egidio Corradi De Ferrari chose the hills of Cervognano, one of the finest sub-zones of the appellation, to pursue his passion for viticulture. The estate has since passed through generations of the De Ferrari family, with Luca de Ferrari today carrying the torch with the same meticulous dedication.

Tour and Tasting at Mastrojanni, Brunello di Montalcino, Castelnuovo dell'Abate

Mastrojanni is one of the great names in Brunello di Montalcino, producing wines of exceptional power and longevity from the southeastern corner of the Montalcino zone. The estate was established in 1975 in the hamlet of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on the slopes of Monte Amiata, and today extends across 272 acres of land. The estate was acquired by the Illy family (the famous espresso) in 1991, who invested significantly in both the vineyards and cellar.

DAY 7: Sunday, June 14

Tour and Tasting at Tolaini, Chianti Classico DOCG, Castelnuovo Berardenga

Tolaini was founded in 1998 by Pier Luigi Tolaini, a Tuscan native who built a successful career in Canada creating one of the largest transportation and logistics company in North America. It took almost half a century when homesickness made him return to his homeland with a dream: to create world-class wine from the southernmost reaches of Chianti Classico. He acquired a magnificent estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga, which is Chianti Classico's warmest and most southerly commune. Today the estate is led by his daughter Lia Tolaini-Banville. Banville is an important wine importer and wine distributor agency in North America. To honor the ancient history of this land, Pier Luigi Tolaini chose the Etruscan symbol for the letter “T” as the logo for the winery. This symbol can be found on the bottle label as well as at the entrance gate to the winery.

Guided City Tour of Siena

Siena is the quintessential Tuscan hilltop town, with its rich history in banking, art, cuisine, gothic architecture and its historic UNESCO world heritage city center. The area around Siena was first settled during the Etruscan period (900-400 BC) by an Etruscan subtribe called the Saina. The town itself traces its beginnings to a Roman garrison stationed there by Emperor Augustus. Culturally, Siena flourished during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. In 1240 the University of Siena was founded, making it one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world. Siena's distinctive Gothic architecture is exemplified by the iconic Duomo di Siena and the Palazzo Pubblico. In 1555 Siena finally capitulated to a joint imperial Spanish and Florentine army, and Siena fell under the domain of the Medici. Following the death of the last heirless Medici in 1737, the city fell to the house of Habsburg- Lothringen, and became a part of the Habsburg empire, where it remained, with interruption, until the Risorgimento. In 1859 Siena was the first town in Tuscany to vote in favor of joining the Kingdom of Italy.

Wine Dinner at Vineria Le Potazzine, Montalcino

The dinner was on the main square of Montalcino. The Potazzine wine shop and eatery was founded by Gigliola Gianetti, who once worked for Bondi Santi and the Montalcino Consorzio before opening a wine shop, the Vineria, in Montalcino and starting her own winery Tenuta Le Potazzine. Today her daughters Viola and Sofia are running the Tenuta.

Before dinner, we had an hour to walk around Montalcino.

After-dinner Drink at the Hotel - Foresteria Podere Brizio

DAY 8: Monday, June 15

Tour and Tasting at Siro Pacenti, Brunello di Montalcino, Montalcino

Siro Pacenti is one of the most admired and under-the-radar influential estates in Montalcino: a small, family-run producer whose wines have earned a devoted global following without ever sacrificing their deeply personal character. The estate was established in 1970 when Siro Pacenti purchased a property in the Pelagrilli locality north of Montalcino, planting vineyards in the fresh, clay-rich soils of the land overlooking Siena that remain in production today. In 1988 his son Giancarlo took over management and began bottling Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino under the family label for the first time. In the early 1990s the estate expanded to include land at Piancornello south of Montalcino (where Giancarlo's maternal grandfather had planted five hectares in the late 1960s in mineral-rich soils) adding a crucial second terroir expression to the portfolio. All 54 acres are planted exclusively with Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello). The contrasting positions - the cooler, clay-dominant north and the warmer, mineral-rich south - give Siro Pacenti wines their signature complexity: aromatic precision and structure from Pelagrilli, depth and density from Piancornello.

Tasting

Tour and Tasting at Casanova di Neri, Brunello di Montalcino, Montalcino with Gianlorenzo and Giacomo Neri

The story of Casanova di Neri is inseparable from the story of Brunello di Montalcino's rise to world fame. Giovanni Neri founded the estate in 1971, at a moment when the denomination had barely thirty producers and Brunello remained largely unknown outside Italy. He chose Podere Casanova on the northeastern side of Montalcino, recognizing its exceptional altitude, aspect, and soil composition as ideal for producing great Sangiovese. The first Brunello was bottled in 1978, and from there the estate's reputation grew steadily. Today the estate farms 119 acres of vineyards across six distinct parcels at different elevations and soil types - from galestro and clay to red sedimentary clay - allowing the winemaking team led by Gianlorenzo Casanova to craft wines of remarkable nuance and site expression. The pivotal moment in the estate's history came in 2006, when Wine Spectator named their Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 2001 its Wine of the Year - the first Brunello ever to receive the honor, and only the third Italian wine in the ranking's history. Their Cerretalto single-vineyard Brunello remains one of Italy's most coveted wines.

Giacomo Neri, who we had met at Chain Bridge Cellars in McLean, Virginia, before, was our host. Gianlorenzo Neri greeted us.

Tour and Wine-pairing lunch at Castello di Camigliano, Brunello di Montalcino, Montalcino

Castello di Camigliano has one of the longest documented histories of any estate in the Montalcino zone, with the castle itself dating to medieval times and winemaking on the property predating the modern denomination by centuries. The estate sits in the western reaches of the Montalcino hill, where soils shift toward a heavier clay and limestone composition that retains water well (a critical advantage in this often-dry terrain) and the altitude provides the diurnal cooling that keeps wines fresh and aromatic despite the heat of the summer months.

DAY 09: Tuesday, June 16

We left Montalcino in the morning and drove to Bolgheri.

Tour and Tasting at Tua Rita, Maremma, Suvereto

Tua Rita is one of the great modern legends of Italian wine: a story of passion, accident, and extraordinary achievement. Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti purchased a small property near Suvereto in the Val di Cornia in 1984, originally intending simply to live in harmony with nature. But their love of wine drew them inexorably toward the cellar, and by the early 1990s they were producing wines that astonished the Italian wine world. While Bolgheri's Super Tuscans were already attracting attention further north, Tua Rita was the first producer to pursue international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah in this more southerly coastal zone closer to Livorno. The breakthrough came in 2000, when the Redigaffi, a 100% Merlot, became the first Italian wine ever awarded 100 points by Robert Parker, an achievement that put Tua Rita and coastal Tuscany permanently on the fine wine map. The estate remains in family hands, led today by Virgilio's son-in-law Stefano Frascolla, with vineyard management and winemaking overseen since the early years by the esteemed Luca D'Attoma.

His Bistecca Fiorentina has entered the world of a legendary culinary experience. He became a national celebrity in 2001 when he held an open casket funeral for the Bistecca Fiorentina, which had been banned by the Italian Ministry of Health during the mad cow epidemic.

Tour and Tasting at Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, Bolgheri Superiore, Bolgheri

Ornellaia is one of the undisputed icons of world wine, and a visit here is a genuinely historic experience. The estate was established in 1981 by Lodovico Antinori on the coastal Maremma plains of Bolgheri, in the zone that his uncle Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta had dramatically opened to the world's attention with Sassicaia just years before. The first vintage of Ornellaia's flagship wine was released in 1988, and it immediately signaled that something extraordinary had arrived. Today Ornellaia is owned by the Frescobaldi family. They had the vision to hire accomplished Bordeaux winemaker Axel Heinz as creative director for their estates Masseto and Ornellaia. For 17 years he managed both estates with meticulous precision and under his leadership Ornellaia and Masseto have grown to become globally sought-after cult wines. In 2025 Ornellaia and Masseto's team has appointed Marco Balsimelli as the new Production Director. The flagship Ornellaia, a Bordeaux-style blend of breathtaking depth and age-worthiness, is joined by Le Serre Nuove (the estate's approachable second wine) and the spectacular white Ornellaia Bianco. A visit to this estate is one of the highlights of any serious Tuscany itinerary.

Tasting at Poggio al Tesoro , Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci

Poggio al Tesoro, or "hill of the treasure", is the Bolgheri estate of the Allegrini family of Valpolicella, one of Italy's great wine dynasties, who early on recognized the extraordinary potential of this coastal Tuscan terroir. The estate was established in 2000 and encompasses vineyards on the gentle slopes of Castagneto Carducci within the Bolgheri DOC zone. The estate's flagship is Dedicato a Walter, a Cabernet Franc-led blend named in tribute to the Allegrini patriarch.

 Shopping and Lunch in Bolgheri

Tour and Tasting at Castello di Bolgheri, Bolgheri DOC, Bolgheri, with Next-generation Owner Clementi Zileri Dal Verne and Winemaker Allessandro Dondi

At the very heart of the Bolgheri story sits Castello di Bolgheri, the estate most intimately connected with the history and aristocratic heritage of this legendary appellation. Today, the estate produces Bolgheri DOC wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah, under the direction of Clemente Zileri, combining the weight and warmth of a prime Bolgheri terroir (deep alluvial soils, maritime breezes, and exceptional sun exposure) with the elegance and restraint that aristocratic heritage seems to demand. Visiting the estate is as much a journey into Tuscan history as it is a wine tasting.

Tour and Tasting at Podere Grattamacco, Bolgheri Superiore DOC, Castagneto Carducci

Grattamacco holds a singular place in the Bolgheri story: it was one of the very first estates in the zone to produce quality wine alongside the original pioneers, establishing its reputation in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Bolgheri was still largely uncharted territory. The estate was founded by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, who recognized the potential of the rocky hillside terrain above the valley floor - higher, stonier, and cooler than the coastal flats - to produce wines of exceptional structure and minerality. In 2002, Grattamacco was acquired by Colle Massari, the Tuscan wine group, which invested in the cellar while fiercely protecting the estate's distinctive hillside character. What sets Grattamacco apart from many Bolgheri estates is its elevated hillside position: the rocky, well-drained soils and slightly cooler temperatures yield wines of greater aromatic finesse and tannic precision rather than sheer opulence.
