Once a year, the EU embassies in Washington DC open their doors for an EU Open House.
This year, there also was German wine at the German Embassy, provided by the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter). Annette Schiller (ombiasy WineTours) and I (Vice-President of the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter)) poured the German wines during the afternoon shift. Hanne Caraher and Kevin Ross (both also Board members of the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter)) poured in the morning. We poured a total of about 800 1-ounce cups and answered all kinds of questions concerning German wine.
If you would like to have more information on the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter), see the web site of the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter): German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter)

Hop from the Seine to the Rhine, across the Alps to the Pyrenees, up the Danube, over the Carpathians, from the Mediterranean to the Baltic, all without leaving the District.
This year Germany and France will present themselves together at the German Embassy in Washington, where both Embassy grounds and the Ambassador’s residence will be open to the public. Visitors can discover the food, culture and diplomatic life of these two nations at the heart of Europe in just a single stop at 4645 Reservoir Road on Saturday, May 9, 2015.
Enjoy some of the best food and drink from each country off a carefully selected Franco-German menu or from the food stations. Listen to German and French music as you enjoy the many offerings. Ritter Sport and Haribo will be sponsoring the event, so make sure to grab some tasty German treats! Visit the German Information Center USA booth to pick up some fun stuff for kids, including coloring books and “magic” pencils. Find out more about both countries via free publications, maps and more. Visit booths to learn more about German economics, military and language. Enter our raffle for a chance to win fabulous prizes from local businesses and organizations with a connection to German culture. The Press Departments of both embassies invite our guests to take their pictures at the selfie stations in front of their favorite German and French attractions that represent the best of both our countries! Take a picture near an iconic German or French item during the Open House and you could win a prize! Just be sure to post your picture on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #EUMiniTrip!
We look forward to seeing you at the German Embassy on May 9th!

German Wine at the EU Open House
We were at the table of the German Minstry of Food and Agriculture, with Astrid Jakobs de Pádua, Minister Counselor, Food and Agriculture, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany. Next to our table you could sample French cheese. German wine and French cheese!
We poured about 800 one-ounce cups, from the cellar of the German Wine Society and 2014 Dr. L (Weingut Dr. Loosen). The wines from the cellar were mostly older vintages from different German wine regions and included Sekt and red wine. We poured wine from the Pfalz, Mosel, Nahe, Rheingau, Baden, Rheinhessen and Saale-Unstrut. Germans love sparklig wine (Sekt). One out of 4 bottles of sparkling wine produced in the world is consumed in Germany. Also not well known outside of Germany: more than 1/3 of the German wine production is red wines. The German Pinot Noirs can compete with any Pinot Noir from anywhere in the world, including Burgundy and Oregon.

2014 Dr. L Weingut Dr. Losen, Mosel
By the time Annette and I took over the table, all wine from the cellar of the German Wine Society had been poured. We poured the 2014 Dr. L by Weingut Dr. Loosen. This wine is an entry-level wine of the world class producer Weingut Dr. Loosen in the Mosel Valley. It is widely available in the US. We purchased our bottles at MacArthur Beverages in Washington DC.
