The Bordaux Tour by ombiasy WineTours typically begins in Bordeaux City in the afternoon. We meet at the hotel, visit an estate in the viccinity of Bordeaux City and a negociant house and finish the day with dinner in Bordeaux city.
This year, on the Bordeaux Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours, we went to Château Haut-Bailly, Graves, Appellation Pessac-Léognan, Grand Cru Classé, toured the Millésima Negociant House (just on the other side of the street of our hotel) and had dinner at Restaurant L’Estacade in Bordeaux City, which literally sits on the Garonne river opposite of Bordeaux City center.
Château Haut-Bailly is just a 30 minutes drive by bus from the Hilton Garden Hotel in Bordeaux City. Château Haut-Bailly just completed a multi-million construction of a state-of-the-art wine cellar.
We got a comprehensive tour of the vineyards and the new wine cellar followed by a tasting in the new tasting room in the wine cellar. When we toured the production facilities we bumped into Jean Christoph, the cellar master, who spent some time with us to explain to us the new facilities and the challenges of the current vintage.
At our visit Château Haut-Bailly was in the middle of the harvest of the 2022 vintage.

Château Haut-Bailly
At Château Haut-Bailly wine has been produced for more than five centuries. Like many Bordeaux estates, the property changed owners multiple times over the centuries. However, three owner families put their mark on the estate. In 1630 it was bought by the Le Bailly family which eventually gave the estate its name. In those days the château had about 80 acres under vine, roughly the same as today. There were many ups and downs during the centuries and by the 1950s the estate was in a sorry state. A wine merchant from Belgium, Daniel Sanders, bought the château in 1955 and started intensive renovations. His efforts proofed him right and Château Haut-Bailly was one of the 16 wine producers awarded with the Grand Cru Classé certification in the 1959 classification of the Graves estates.
In 1998, Elisabeth and Robert G. Wilmers – he was an American banker (he passed away in 2018), she is French – bought Château Haut-Bailly and spared no expenses to invest in the vineyards, winery, and the château to give the estate the possibility to keep producing top quality wines.
Château Haut-Bailly is managed by Véronique Sanders, fourth generation of the Sanders family. In 2020 a new vinification and barrel cellar was inaugurated. The architecture is stunning: here architecture meets nature with beautiful views of the vineyards.
