Burgundy versus Willamette Valley: A Blind Taste-off at the NoVa Chapter of the American Wine Society presented by Thibaut Marquis, North America Export Manager of Maison Louis Jadot

Burgundy versus Willamette Valley: A Blind Taste-off! at the NoVa Chapter of the American Wine Society presented by Thibaut Marquis, North America Export Manager of Maison Louis Jadot and organized by Chapter Chair Graydon Vandament. Thanks for this wonderful event Thibaut and Graydon!

Invitation

Just a reminder that tomorrow evening is the April AWS NoVA Chapter meeting.

This is going to be a fun event as Thibaut Marquis will be presenting a blind, side-by-side tasting of eight wines, showcasing the classic wines of Burgundy . . . Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

In each of the four flights presented will be a wine from Louis Jadot's portfolio of wines made in Burgundy and a very similar wine from Jadot's Resonance Winery in Oregon's Willamette Valley.

I've done this tasting with Thibaut before and it's darn hard to accurately figure out which is which, and which one you like better, (even though they are all excellent).

Please note - we have a very large crowd, (60 people), for this presentation, so I'll ask in advance that you please be respectful of the speaker and everyone else in the room by keeping the "table talk" to an absolute minimum while Thibaut is speaking.  He will allow plenty of time for discussion as he goes through the evening....

Louis Jadot (wine-searcher)

Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy's most important wine producers and négociants, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with a portfolio that covers everything from inexpensive Bourgogne and Beaujolais wines to several grand cru wines, from the Côte de Beaune to Chablis. Unsurprisingly, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay feature heavily in the portfolio.

The house was founded in Beaune in 1859 by Louis Jadot, although the first vineyard – Clos de Ursules – was purchased in the 1820s. The headquarters remains in Beaune, although vineyard holdings have increased exponentially.

Louis Jadot owns land in some of Burgundy's most famous vineyards, including Le Musigny, Échezeaux, Chapelle-Chambertin and in the famously fragmented Clos de Vougeot vineyard. Louis Jadot wines are also made in Chambertin, Montrachet, Corton and Romanée-Saint-Vivant.

As well as the sizeable portfolio of wines made under the Louis Jadot label itself, the house also makes wines for Domaine du Duc de Magenta, and for Domaine Gagey. Andre Gagey took over as general manager for Louis Jadot in 1968 and, along with winemaker Jacques Lardière, was often held responsible for building Jadot's high reputation in the 70s and 80s.

The firm was acquired in 1985 by the owners of US wine importer Kobrand, which still owns the company and imports Jadot's wines into the US.

Gagey, whose son Pierre-Henry Gagey took over as president in 1991, died in 1999 and Lardière retired in 2012. Frédéric Barnier, who joined the company in 2010, has since taken over as head winemaker. Thibault Gagey has since joined his father Pierre-Henry at the helm of the firm.

Jadot is also strongly associated with its in-house cooperage and barrel brand, Cadus, which was established in 1996 in the village Ladoix-Serrigny (just outside Beaune) in cooperation with barrel firm Tonnellerie Vicard. In 2013, Vicard sold its stake in the operation to independent French stave mill Canadell.

Résonance Wines

Open Daily 11am-5pm
12050 NW Meadowlake Rd Carlton, Or 97111
Founded in 2013, Résonance Wines sits in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, in a hidden part of Willamette Valley just west of the small agricultural town of Carlton. The seeds for our project had been planted when Maison Louis Jadot set out to establish its first winery outside of Burgundy.

We craft expressive Pinot Noir, Rosé and Chardonnay wines from our estate Résonance Vineyard and other premier sites throughout the Willamette Valley. Our recently-opened tasting room is located on a dramatic hilltop on the Résonance property. Experience the harmony between our vineyards, our wines, and our people with public and private tastings (open daily 11am-5pm, walk-ins welcome). Walk among moss-covered, old-growth Oregon oak trees, and witness the breathtaking beauty of the sun-dappled Oregon Coast Range.

My favorites of each flight were all of the Oregon wines. Didn’t pick any of the Burgundy Louis Jadot wines…..but that doesn’t mean that I liked them. I kind of liked the Chardonnays but none of the Pinot Noirs. When I lived in Europe, Jadot wines were considered grocery store wines. Jadot was always a negotiant and not a Cultivator of grapes, buying grapes to make their wines hence the name Maison Louis Jadot as opposed to Domaine.

We enjoyed the tasting event. I surprised myself by guessing all four tastings correctly.

I think all 8 wines showed very well. Except for the entry level Chardonnay, I was surprised how "Burgundian" the wines from Oregon were. Finally, I was surprised that in all four flights, the wines from Oregon were more expensive than those from Burgundy, in particular in the 2 entry-level flights.
