Invitation - Meet the Masters of Barolo

We’re excited to welcome the Broccardo family back to Falls Church for a special wine dinner on Monday, September 8!

Broccardo is a family-run winery in Monforte d’Alba, at the heart of Italy’s UNESCO-recognized Langhe region. Today, siblings Filippo, Laura, and Federica carry forward their family’s winemaking legacy, honoring tradition while bringing a fresh, modern energy to each bottle.

Imagine sipping a wine shaped by the earth over 16 million years. From Barolo’s most celebrated crus, Broccardo crafts wines with unmistakable power, finesse, and elegance, built to captivate now and age gracefully for decades.

Broccardo Winery (GoogleAI based)

Broccardo Winery, located in Monforte d'Alba in the heart of Italy's Piedmont region, is a family-run estate with a legacy stretching back to 1900.

Location: Monforte d'Alba, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy.

Wines Produced: Barolo DOCG, Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, Langhe Arneis, and Langhe Rosato

Grape Varieties: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Arneis.

Vineyards: 13 hectares located in Monforte d'Alba, Barolo, and Novello, encompassing prestigious crus like San Giovanni, Bricco San Pietro, Paiagallo, and Ravera.

Winemaking Philosophy: Emphasizes expressing the purity of the terroir with minimal intervention, using sustainable practices, and favoring Slavonian and French oak for aging Barolo, Nebbiolo, and Barbera, while using steel for Dolcetto, Arneis, and Rosato to preserve fruit character.

Family-Run: Currently managed by the third generation, siblings Filippo, Laura, and Federica Broccardo.

A young heart with strong roots in the past

Three siblings… Filippo, Laura and Federica decide to collect everything that has been handed down to them by their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents: respect for the land, that of the Langhe, love for a job that gives no respite, work of the vineyard in respect of the territory, and they have bottled it for you, so that you can taste it in the right philosophy of life: “Nunc est bibendum, nunc pede libero pulsanda tellus”. (Now one must drink, and with one’s foot strike the earth in freedom – Horace, Odes, I, 37, 1)

History

The parents had been marketing the grapes since the 1970s, but it was only with the entry of the three brothers into the company in 2009 that full production began, with a large trend towards exports mainly to Europe, the United States and Asia.

From a careful selection of the grapes, the fine wines of the Langa are born, in particular Barolo DOCG, Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Barbera d ‘Alba DOC , Dolcetto d’Alba DOC, Langhe DOC Arneis and Langhe DOC Rosato. Since 2014 the cellar has been part of the area that has become a UNESCO heritage site.
From the 2016 harvest, the wine is obtained with low environmental impact viticultural and oenological techniques.

Vinification

The scrupulous use of wood is evident, favoring Slavonian oak and French oak for the refinement of Barolo, Nebbiolo and Barbera. For the production of wines with more fruity and fresh characters such as Dolcetto, Arneis and Rosato, the use of steel is instead preferred. The training system used in the vineyards is the guyot system, with sustainable practices of work in the vineyard.

The vinification is focused on the purity of each wine, maintaining the fruity scents, without altering their peculiarities, so that the characteristics of our Langa land can be perceived. The company follows the EU directives (integrated production technical law n. 214) which provides for the practice of grassing and the containment of treatments.

Wines

The property consists of 13 hectares of vineyards that extend between the municipalities of Monforte d’Alba with the Cru San Giovanni and Bricco San Pietro, Barolo with the Cru Paiagallo and Novello with the Cru Ravera. Production is focused on Barolo DOCG, but Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Barbera d’Alba DOC, Dolcetto d’Alba DOC, Langhe Arneis DOC and Langhe Rosato DOC are also produced.

Barolo DOCG

The wines belonging to the Barolo DOCG denomination respond to the Barolo and Barolo Riserva types and are obtained from the vinification of the Nebbiolo vine in purity, cultivated according to traditional methods or with Guyot pruning and espalier training. The disciplinary provides for an aging period of 38 months respectively, of which 18 in wood, for the basic version and 62 months, of which always 18 in wood for the reserve version. The distinctive character of Barolo is its structure which expresses a complex and enveloping bouquet, of great longevity, that is able to develop over time without losing its organoleptic characteristics. The property consists of 5.5 hectares of Nebbiolo da Barolo vineyards which extend between the municipalities of Monforte d’Alba with the Cru San Giovanni and Bricco San Pietro, of Barolo with the Cru Paiagallo and of Novello, with the cru Ravera.

Welcome to Thompson Italian! - Our family restaurants are a true labor of love that have been a lifetime in the making (Thompsan Italian)

They’re a place to share a bowl of pasta and great conversation with your partner, spend a festive night sipping martinis with your best friends, and make long-lasting memories around a table filled with your family’s Italian favorites.

Our journey together began in 2007 when we met while working as part of the opening team at West Village’s Dell’anima restaurant. After honing our culinary skills at some of New York City’s top-rated restaurants like Per Se, Le Bernardin, and Del Posto, we went on to become chef-owners at three more popular Italian spots in Manhattan — L’Artusi, Anfora, and L’Apicio — as well as co-authors of the cookbook “Downtown Italian.”

In 2015, we relocated with our two children to Northern Virginia to be closer to family and create the neighborhood restaurant we’d always envisioned, where people can gather for a great meal in a warm and welcoming place.

After searching for the perfect spot to open our namesake restaurant, we realized there’s no better place for that than our own backyard. So, in 2019, we opened the first location of Thompson Italian in Falls Church and over the past three years we’ve grown roots in our community — creating relationships with local farmers, feeding families, and sharing thousands of meals with cherished regulars.

We have picked up a few accolades along the way, too, including spots on the Washington Post, Washingtonian and Northern Virginia Magazine Best Restaurant lists, and a James Beard nomination for Katherine for Outstanding Pastry Chef of the Year.

Now we’re excited to open the doors to our second location, just across the river in Alexandria. You’ll find some familiar favorites at our new spot on King Street — like our famous garlic bread, meatballs and olive oil cake — plus an expanded selection of handmade pastas and fresh seafood.

We designed Thompson Italian to be a casual spot where anyone can stop in for a great meal and a glass of wine without fuss and pretense. We’ll make sure you can get delicious food and a fun night out with the family in one place, so bring the kids!

Cheers, Gabe & Katherine Thompson
