Pictures: Cantonese food and German/ Austrian wines: Wine Dinner at our home in McLean, Northern Virginia, Orchestrated by Janet Cam (Food) and Annette Schiller (Wines), with the help of Sous-chef Scheyla Acosta (August 2025)
Dear Wine and Food Friends,
The response to the Cantonese Dinner paired with German Speaking Wines that Janet Cam and I hosted was overwhelming. The seats were filled minutes after we sent our invites. The waiting list became longer and longer. Hence Janet and I decided to do a second dinner. There are new wines from my cellar and a new menu for the evening since some guests wanted to attend again!
When:
Saturday, September 20, 2025
6:30 pm apéritif - 7:00 pm dinner
Where:
Home of Annette and Christian Schiller
6404 Woodsong Court
McLean, VA 22101
Please see the menu, the wines, the costs and how to sign up below:
APERITIF:
Shanghainese Peanuts
NV Steininger Sekt en Magnum, Weingut Steininger, Kamptal, Austria
Perfectly balanced fruit with mouth filling bubbles, nutty citrus palate, and a long fresh finish. The wine
has the complexity and balance of a fine Champagne.
FIRST:
Spinach. Minced Pork and Tofu Soup
This soup is a very special comfort food that I shared with my son, Austin. Every Friday I would drive to Monterey Park to ferry him back to my home in Santa Monica to spend the weekend together. Austin lived with my parents during the week to attend the school I had attended a block from home. This is a quick meal with rice stirred into the broth sitting on the floor to watch television as we ate and chatted.
2019 Riesling, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Grand Cru, Winery Hüls, Mosel, Germany
Having aged several years in the bottle this mature wine developed a smoothness and precision.
MAIN:
Salad of Shrimp, Bean Sprouts, Scallions and Agar with a Sesame Oil and Soy Sauce Dressing
Lisa, my sister, and Mom favored this cooling dish during the warm months in Southern California.
Braised Lotus Root
The lotus root is braised with oyster sauce and scallions and one of the food items served during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Lotus root is chock full of auspicious symbolism in its name, shape, and texture. Firstly, means “togetherness” (连, lián) and a “pair” (偶, ǒu). As
for its shape, lotus root grows in sections like bamboo, bringing to
mind new opportunities. As for the texture, if you’ve had lotus root
before, you know there are delicate fibrous threads, a little bit like
the texture of okra. These threads can be hard to break, so it
represents being inseparable. *
Red Cooked Duck
So, why duck? Apparently, there is an old folk tale passed down for centuries about people coming together to overturn a corrupt ruler, and his name sounded like “duck” in the local dialect. So, to eat a duck is to get rid of the oppressor! For more practical reasons, eating duck in the fall has health benefits according to traditional Chinese medicine. It nourishes your body to fight the dryness of the fall and winter.
Ginger Coin Rice
We offer three distinctively different wines from three of the Top Ten German vintners. This format offers you the opportunity to experience these wines and decide for yourself which wine you deem perfect with a specific dish.
2022 Riesling, Kiedrich, Weingut Robert Weil, Rheingau, Germany
2021 Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder), Birkweil, Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz, Pfalz, Germany
2017 Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Tschuppen, Single Vineyard, Weingut Ziereisen, Baden, Germany
DESSERT:
Moon Cakes
Moon cakes are probably the most famous of all Mid-Autumn Festival foods. They symbolize the moon and family unity. The mid-autumn moon is full, and families with moon cakes in hand are harmonious, happy, and healthy. Our family and extended family always looked forward to celebrating the festival with Cantonese style moon cakes cut into fourths. With the richness of the moon cakes, we served Pu-erh-tea.
