Germany Rhein-Mosel-Nahe 2024 by ombiasy WineTours took place from August 28 – Friday, September 06, 2024. We spent 10 days visiting top wine estates in five wine regions, tasting fabulous Rieslings and Pinot Noir (aka Spätburgunder), meeting world-renowned wine makers, travelling through the world’smost beautiful wine regions, cruising on the romantic Rhein river, looking at dizzying steep vineyards along the Rhein and Mosel rivers, and delving deep into German history and culture: Rheinhessen • Rheingau • Mittelrhein • Mosel • Nahe

went to Kloster Eberbach. It is one of Europe's best-preserved and
important medieval monasteries. Still a world-class winery today, the
Eberbach Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery, founded in 1136 by
Bernard of Clairvaux as the first Cistercian monastery on the eastern
bank of the Rhine river. Its Romanesque and Gothic buildings are very
impressive.
Our visit of Kloster Eberbach had several components.
(1) We started with lunch at the Kloster Eberbach tavern.
(2) We then toured the abbey with a guide.
(3) We drove a mile to the new winemaking facility of Kloster Eberbach, the Steinbergkeller, and met Katharina Puff, the head-winemaker of Weingut Kloster Eberbach. We visited the famous Steinberg vineyard with her, followed by a tour of the Steinbergkeller, the new winery.
(4) The visit of the Eberbach Abbey and Weingut Kloster Eberbach ended with an extensive tasting, led by Kathrin Puff.

Guided Tour of Kloster Eberbach
Kloster Eberbach, one of Europe's best-preserved and important medieval
monasteries, lies in a valley near the town of Eltville in the
Rheingau. Still a world-class winery today, the Eberbach Abbey is a
former Cistercian monastery, founded in 1136 by Bernard of Clairvaux as
the first Cistercian abbey on the eastern bank of the Rhine river. Its
Romanesque and Gothic buildings are very impressive.
The Cistercian monk Bernard of Clairvaux from Burgundy founded the
winery when establishing the abbey. In medieval times Eberbach Abbey
was the largest winery in all of Europe with 750 acres of vineyards.
Today Eberbach Abbey is one of the five State-owned wineries (the State
of Hesse is its proprietor) and with 500 acres the largest winery in
Germany. The estate’s holdings in highly esteemed vineyards in the
Hessische Bergstrasse and the Rheingau wine region are unparalleled.
