Dear wine friends,
I just came back with a group of true wine connoisseurs from an 11-day wine tour in Germany along the rivers Main, Rhein, Ahr, Mosel, and Nahe.
I realized again how delicious and fascinating German wines are and how magical they are when it comes to wine and food pairing. German wine production goes back 2000 years, to when the ancient Romans planted many of Germany’s best vineyards.
My focus today is on the extremely steep and rocky Mittelrhein and Mosel valley vineyards. It is hazardous to work in these almost 60° steep vineyards - but these vineyards, rising up from gorgeous valleys formed by the rivers, are sacred places.
Germany is one of the greatest wine countries in the world, and yet, German wine is oddly underappreciated by American wine lovers. The lack of serious wine tourism after the Second World War has particularly hurt the Mosel and Mittelrhein wine regions, and has hampered the building up of Germany’s reputation as a top-quality wine country, an understanding of the wines, and the education of the world about German wines. During the third quarter of the 19th century, prices for German wines were well above a Romanée-Conti or a first growth Bordeaux, but the inexpensive prices demanded by the market in the 20th and 21st century are simply not justified.
Unfortunately, many people still believe that all Mosel wines are sweet, which simply is not the reality. The Mosel is one of the northernmost wine regions in the world and despite global warming, the essence of a Mosel wine is that it is brilliantly sharp, cutting, salty, mineral, herbal, and acidic. That makes it a perfect oyster wine. I quote the importer of fine Mosel wines, vom Boden: “A true Moselle makes a Muscadet feel common, it makes a Chablis feel like a warm, soft beanbag next to a roaring fire.”
Cheers
Annette
PS: Do not forget to sign up for my last wine tour of this year 2026! During this tour I will take you to another cool-climate wine region, to Alto Adige-Trentino in the beautiful Alpin and Dolomite area around Bozen in northern Italy. There is only 1 single and 1 double room left for this tour.
