Dinner at Restaurant Château de Pizay in Belleville-en-Beaujolais - From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, July 02 - Thursday, July 13, 2023. The tour started in Lyon and ended in Paris.

We stayed one night in Beaujolais at Château de Pizay and had an excellent dinner there.

Château de Pizay

This beautiful old property dates back to the middle ages and takes it’s name from the Cote du Py which rises up on the western side of the chateau. There is an old Roman road close to the chateau which was the main route for goods heading north and the configuration of the chateau and its buildings is apparently very much in the style of a Roman villa.

Once a very large estate this property has changed hands several times over the past few decades and now consists of about 40ha of vineyards as well as the chateau. All of the vineyards of the estate are farmed organically and vinifications are made in a classic way with ferments taking place in cement tanks and for the cru’s such as their Morgon a portion of roughly 25% ages in a variety of oak from barrels to larger foudres.

A Château Full of Charm in the Heart of Beaujolais

Château de Pizay: 45 minutes from Lyon, 1h 40min from Paris by TGV (Macon Loche station) and 30 minutes from Macon, at the heart of the Beaujolais and in the middle of its 80 ha of vines, the Château de Pizay, built between the 11th and the19th Centuries, is an ideal place for "Gourmet", "Wellbeing" or "Romantic" getaways...

An exceptional location for lovers of the great outdoors, fine wines and regional specialties. Situated between Brouilly and Morgon, this is much more than a 4-star hotel, a resort hotel – for Meetings - Vineyard & Spa resort, Château de Pizay is one of the largest estates in the region to have successfully adapted its charms to the hospitality industry, often imitated but never equaled.

After a tourist excursion in the area, a walk in the French garden designed by Le Nôtre or an afternoon of tailor-made treatment at the Spa, in the evening you can enjoy a delicious cocktail in the lounge /bar, both a relaxing place and gallery of local artists, lounge bar and artist gallery before dinner, served outside in the courtyard in the summer.

History of Château de Pizay

The name Pizay was mentioned for the first time in 1030 in the Charters of the Abbey of Cluny. In 1070, walls were erected by the Lords of Pizay. In the 14th century, they built a sturdy tower and in the 18th century, the addition of a French-style garden added charm and elegance to the estate.

The configuration of the site is reminiscent of a Roman villa or perhaps a rest camp for travelers arriving from Rome on their way to Autun. A likely scenario given the proximity of an ancient byway, partly destroyed today.

The NANTON family left their mark on the history of the estate during the brilliant Renaissance period, ruling the land under a feudal system under the authority of the Lords of Beaujeu.

During the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, the NANTON dynasty gave way to that of SAINTE-COLOMBE.

In the 18th Century, the wealthy nobility of the time, descendants of Lyonnais drapers, undertook the embellishment of PIZAY, which continued until the dark years of the 20th Century, between the two World Wars.

David Miller: Summer 2023 - Monday, July 3

We’re spending the night at the Chateau de Pizay, and it’s an incredible property, from the avenue of sycamores with yard-thick trunks to the ancient castle keep that is now the main building to the eccentric topiary garden… Dinner tonight was great; it started with a perfectly ripe fig and some foie gras mousse, followed by red mullet in broth, then a piece of sirloin, and finally an eclair with some vanilla ice cream. Again, wine was involved.

Gault&Millau (12/ 20 Points)

Arriving

Oeno-sensorial Tour

Some of us took a most educational and fun tour at Chateau de Pizay. The cellar is home to 8 discovery stations where you go on an initiatory journey of the wine making process in which you discover the basics of wine - tasting with quizzes on colour, aroma, flavour, flavour interactions, tannin, the difference between aromas and flavours, using oak barrels and the aging of wine. The tour ends in the tasting room.
