Mario Scheuermann's Deutsche Sauvignon Blanc Trophy 2014, Germany
No longer limited to the Loire Valley in France and Marlborough in New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc is now cultivated all over the world, including in Germany. Against this background, wine journalist Mario Scheuermann, jointly with the Weinbrief Weinwisser, organized for the 8th time the annual “Deutsche Sauvignon Blanc Trophy” competition in Hamburg, Germany.
The Photos in this posting are all from Mario Scheuermann's facebook page, except a few ones, which are mine.

The Top 10 German 2012/2013 Sauvignon Blanc Wines
Oliver Zeter, Weingut Zeter, a relatively unknown winery in the Pfalz region, won the Deutsche Sauvignon Blanc Trophy 2014 with his 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Fumé. The runner-up was the 2012 Sauvignon Blanc 500 of Weingut von Winning. Both wines were fermented and aged in barrique. #3 was Sauvignon Blanc 2012 of Weingut Karl-Heinz Johner (Bischoffingen am Kaiserstuhl). This wine did not seen any wood. Other unwooded Sauvignon Blancs that scored well were those of Weingut Wassmer and Weingut Aufricht, both from Baden.

Sauvignon Blanc in Austria – A Comparative Tasting with Falstaff's Peter Moser at Weinsinn in Frankfurt, Germany
Pictures: Christian G.E. Schiller withe Peter Moser, Gerhard Elze and Weinsinn Owner Matthias Scheiber at the Sauvignon Blanc Tasting at the Weinsinn in Frankfurt am Main, Germany
No longer limited to the Loire Valley in France and Marlborough in New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc is now cultivated all over the world, including in Austria. Against this background, the Austrian Wine Marketing Association had invited to a comparative tasting of Sauvignon Blanc wines from Austria, the Loire Valley and New Zealand. The tasting was orchestrated by Peter Moser, Falstaff WeinGuide Austria Editor-in-Chief, and Gerhard Elze, Austrian Wine Marketing Board, and took place in the Weinsinn, a bistronomics restaurant in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Sauvignon Blanc in the World
Around 80,000 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc are estimated to be planted worldwide, with the largest concentrations in France and New Zealand.
The Sauvignon Blanc originates from the Bordeaux and Loire regions in France. In latter, it is used as the primary grape to produce Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Separated by the Loire River, these appellations produce whites with lovely acidity and are to be consumed fresh and young.
In Bordeaux, Sauvignon Blanc is one of only four white grapes allowed in the production of white Bordeaux AOC. Sauvignon Blanc is planted primarily in Graves and is usually blended with Sémillon to add further complexity and body. Within Graves, a number of the upper end Sauvignon Blancs, produced in the prestigious Pessac-Léognan, are made in a creamy, complex style which are capable of aging.

In the Sauternes region, the grape is blended with Sémillon to make the noble-sweet Sauternes. The composition varies from producer and can range from 5-50% of Sauvignon Blanc, with the Château d'Yquem using 20%.
In the 1990s, Sauvignon Blanc wines from the maritime climatic regions of New Zealand became popular on the global wine market. The much talked about Marlborough and Hawkes Bay regions within New Zealand produce top notch Sauvignon Blanc with loads of crisp citrus fruit and a distinctive herbal essence.
In California, Sauvignon Blanc wine is also known as Fumé Blanc, introduced by Robert Mondavi. At that time the variety had a poor reputation in California due to its grassy flavor and aggressive aromas. Mondavi decided to try to tame that aggressiveness with barrel agings and released the wine under the name Fumé Blanc as an allusion to the French Pouilly-Fumé. But both oaked and unoaked Sauvignon Blanc wines are today marketed under the name Fumé blanc.
Sauvignon Blanc is also gaining prominence in Austria, South Africa, Italy and Germany. We did not taste any German Sauvignon Blanc, but about 500 producers grow Sauvignon Blanc in Germany on about 600 hectares, mainly in Pfalz and Rheinhessen.
Sauvignon Blanc in Austria
Austria isn’t an obvious source of Sauvignon Blanc, but the scenic region of Styria along the Italian border excels with the grape. Some growers use barrel maturation to make wines that could pass for top-class white Bordeaux, but the general preference is for unoaked styles which offer a very satisfying halfway house between the exuberance of New Zealand and the more refined minerally wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Grapes are now picked much riper than was once the case, with fruit more in the gooseberry and peach spectrum than the tart grapefruit and green pepper style that was in vogue 15 years ago.
The current vineyard area in Austria is a bit less than 1000 hectares.
The Event
The event consisted of 4 parts.
First, we mingled for 30 minutes or so with a Schilcher Sekt brut.
Second, we did a comparative blind tasting of 12 Sauvignon Blanc wines from the Steiermark in Austria, the Loire Valley and from New Zealand.
Third, we ate a quick lunch, prepared by Weinsinn Chef Andre Rickert.
Fourth, we had a chance to taste 20 other Sauvignon Blanc wines from the Steiermark.

Comparative Blind Tasting
Most Sauvignon Blanc produces wines which are crisp, dry and zesty with lovely citrus flavors and hints of grassiness. There are three distinct flavor profiles and styles that one will recognize when tasting Sauvignon Blanc. The fruity style, which often has no oak influence, boasts loads of citrus fruit, particularly grapefruit, lemon, melon and gooseberry that explode on the palate and in the aromas. The second flavor category is that of grassiness. Sauvignon Blanc, no matter where it is grown, often contains aromas and flavors of freshly cut grass or herbal notes. When produced properly, these are amazingly delicious and alluring flavors which complement the citrus fruit beautifully. The final style is produced in California but also elsewhere where some producers have opted to age Sauvignon Blanc in oak, integrating a creamier style of white wine with hints of smoke and vanilla.
Pictures: The Blind Tasting
We went through 12 wines from Austria, the Loire Valley and New Zealnd. Interestingly, there was a broad spectrum among the particiapants both in terms of the views on which wines were the best wines and in terms of the views on which wine came from where. It was never obvious which wine was the wine from Austria.

Wining and Dining in the Buschenschaenke Kitzeckmueller in Kitzeck, Austria
We had a wonderful evening with Gerhard Wohlmuth sen. at the Panorama Restaurant/Hotel Steierland in Kitzeck, where we enjoyed the delicious food of co-owner and Chef Ruth Stelzer. The next day, we were planning to go to Munich, when the sun woke us up and announced a beautiful day. No way to leave the Steiermark. Instead, we visited a couple of winemakers we knew from the time when we used lived in Zagreb, Croatia, like Gebrueder Polz and Sattlerhof, only to realize that they were closed on Sundays. But we drove by, were astonished how things had developed since the mid 1990s. Gebrueder Polz, for example, was a rustic wine tavern near the border post Spielberg (Austria to Slovenia), where we would stop and have a last drink before going to Zagreb. Well, Polz is now a huge operation, very hipp, with a modern tasting room.
What we also enjoyed that day, was a long and very relaxing luncheon at the Buschenschaenke Kitzeckmueller in Kitzeck. Buschenschaenke, literally meaning "bar in the bush", are rustic localities typically serving only their own wines and a limited selection of food (mainly dark bread, cheese, ham and spreads).
Wine Producing Country Austria
Austria has about 50.000 hectares of vineyard, equivalent to about half of Germany’s total vineyard area and one fifth of France’s vineyard area. In terms of world output, Austria’s vineyard area accounts for 0.7 % of the total. Almost all of it in the east of the country. “In the west we ski, in the east we make wine”, says Willi Klinger, head of Austrian Marketing Board. About 70 % of the production is white wine and 30% red wine. About 75 percent of Austria’s production is consumed in Austria and 25 percent is exported.
Austrian wine culture is ancient; people have been producing wine in Austria for 4000 years. But everything changed in 1985, when Austria was rocked by the “antifreeze wine scandal”. Some vintners were caught illicitly sweetening their products with glycol. As a result, the market for Austrian wine, especially the semi-sweet styles then in favor, evaporated overnight. Yet the scandal initiated a revolution that has propelled Austrian wines on to the world stage. It led to a broad rethink, with an emphasis on higher-quality production and innovation that soon became noticed. Young winemakers, drawn by the new emphasis on quality over quantity, brought cutting-edge techniques and farsightedness to vineyards and cellars, revolutionizing both.
Suedsteiermark
Suedsteiermark - a lovely area. Millions of years ago, large parts of Styria were under water. Only a few mountain peaks rose above the prehistoric sea. The Kitzeck Mountain, which boasts most of the Wohlmuth vineyards on breathtakingly steep slopes, belongs to some of the oldest geological formations. Here, the vines thrive on paleozoic schist in optimum southern exposures. It is exactly these special soils which impart that unique and distinctive character to the wines.
South Styria is influenced by Mediterranean climate. Gerhard sen. said: “The interplay of mild weather conditions induced by the southern location with cool breezes coming in from the Alps after sunset produces large temperature differences between day and night. This factor is crucial to the development of intense aromas and flavors in the grapes.”
Kitzeck
The wine-growing village of Kitzeck is the highest altitude wine-growing community in Central Europe. It is uniquely situated high upon the hills and on a clear day it offers a beautiful view of the far stretching countryside below. The local church, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, was built between 1640 and 1644.
Kitzeckmueller
Kitzeckmueller is at the same time a guest quarter, a winery and a Buschenschanke. It is owned and run by Franz-Karl und Andrea Temmel – Kitzeckmüller. Franz-Karl was waiting on us but refused to have his picture taken with us. So, I do not have the usual picture with him and me. He did not talk much to us although I tried to involve him in a conversation. Nevertheless, the wines, the food, the atmosphere and last but not least the view were fantastic.
Guest Quarter: The guest house has 2 Rooms, 1 Apartment and 1 Luxury Apartment. We did not stay there but it looked very cozy from the outside.
Weingut Kitzeckmueller: Weingut Kitzeckmueller is one of the oldest in the region. It was built in 1545 by monks. In the 18th century in the wake of secularization by Emperor Joseph II, it was bought by the Temmel family. Today, Franz-Karl Temmel is the owner and winemaker (8th generation). The vineyard area is 4 hectares. Production amounts to 1000 cases, of which 80% is white wine and 20% red wine. All the wine is sold directly to customers on the premise, most of it in the Buschenschaenke.
Buschenschaenke: What awaits you is good food and wine. You have a choice between indoors and outdoors. We stayed outside to enjoy the fresh air and the fantastic view of the surrounding area. We had a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and some charcutterie and cheese. It was a dream!
