National German Wine Society Board Met Online to Start Preparations for the Upcoming 50th Anniversary of the German Wine Society (USA) in 2027 in Washington DC

On Sunday, February 15, 2026, the National German Wine Society Board (USA) met online, using Zoom. Present were President Beth Sheligo, Delaware Valley Chapter, Vice President and Secretary Carl Willner, Washington DC Chapter, Vice President Barry Boothe, San Francisco Chapter, Treasurer Ken Belsley, Washington DC Chapter and Director Christian Schiller, Washington DC Chapter.

The meeting commenced with the presentation of reports by the various officers, including the membership in the 3 chapters. Currently, the Capital Chapter has 55 memberships (couples or individuals), San Francisco 32 and the Delaware Valley Chapter 18. Next, the board members discussed several issues identified on the meeting agenda, including the status of the finances, continuation and replacement of board members, the upcoming 50th anniversary of the German Wine Society in 2027 and possible modifications to the policies for issuing Silver and Gold Medaillons.

With regard to plans for the 50th Anniversary of the GWS in 2027, VP Boothe and President Sheligo indicated that they could designate an event of each of their chapters as a 50th Anniversary event, which members of other chapters could also attend. The Capital Chapter, which has the relationship with the German Embassy, would be willing to sponsor this main event in Washington D.C. as with other recent anniversaries, aided by a subsidy from National.

HENRIS WeinGuide Germany 2026

The HENRIS WeinGuide Germany 2026 was released recently by HENRIS, a publishing house based in Munich. This is the first HENRIS WeinGuide Germany. Until very recently, the HENRIS publishing house was in charge of the Gault&Millau Guides for Germany, both for restaurants and wine. Basically, the HENRIS WineGuide Germany is the old Gault&Millau WeinGuide Germany with a new name. The team of tasters remained the same, with Otto Geisel heading the team.

Top Winemakers in the Mittelrhein

In the Mittelrhein region, there is 1 winemaker in the 4/5 points category of the Vinum WeinGuide Deutschland/ Germany 2024, 4 producers in the 3.5/5 points category and 2 producers in the 3/5 points category.

Annette Schiller, ombiasy WineTours, and I have 3 of the 7 producers listed at various occasions over the past years, often at their estate during a Germany wine tour by ombiasy WineTours, which is owned and run by Annette Schiller and based in Washington DC, USA.

Mittlerhein

(London Wine Competiton)

Mittelrhein (literally, “Middle Rhine”) is one of the 13 German wine-growing regions, located along a 120-kilometer stretch of the famous Rhine river. The Middle Rhine is commonly thought of as the touristy portion of the Rhine, and probably the wine growing region that most foreigners think of when they think about German wine. Moreover, Mittelrhein is located to arguably the most famous German wine growing region, Mosel.

Despite the picturesque scenery of the region – including the Rhine Gorge, recently included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites – wines from Mittelrhein are rarely exported, due to the combination of increasing domestic demand and declining supply.

The most famous grape varietal from Mittelrhein is Riesling, which accounts for a majority (68%) of all wine produced in the region. The second most popular grape varietal is Spatburgunder, which accounts for just 8.7% of wine production from this region. Trailing far behind are Müller-Thurgau (6.3%) and Kerner (3.3%).

The Mittelrhein wine region is divided into a total of 2 districts, 11 sites, and 111 vineyards. These vineyards are located on both sides of the Rhine. Of the 11 sites, 10 are located in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, while 1 is located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Similar to other German wine growing regions, white wine grapes are dominant, accounting for 85% of all wine produced in Mittelrhein. Predominantly, this is due to the climate of the region, which favors white wine production.
