Lunch at La Mule du Pape in the Center of Châteauneuf-du-Pape - Rhône Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours

Rhône Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours led by Annette Schiller took place from October 13 - October 23. The tour started in Lyon and ended in Châteauneuf-du-Pap/ Avignon. There were 8 of us including Annette and me.

The Rhône Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in France, and the second largest after Bordeaux. The Greeks introduced viticulture in the 4th century BC. Later the Romans came and brought viticulture to a different level. Since then the world has discovered Rhône wines and some of the most famous wines come from the Rhône Valley. The vineyards are located on both sides of the river. The Rhône Valley is divided into two distinctively different regions: the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône.

we had lunch at La Mule du Pape, right next to the Boutique Famille Perrin. Before lunch, some of us walked a bit around in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

In the 13th century, during their stay in Avignon, the Popes – especially Pope John XXII - built a papal summer castle in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They found out that the area had exceptional soils, and they established vineyards on the slopes surrounding the summer palace.

I found a nice article in the Los Angeles Time: “Popes throughout history have liked their juice, and when the Papal Seat moved to Avignon in the 13th century, that juice was Châteauneuf-du-Pape ("the pope's new castle") made from grapes grown nearby in the Southern Rhône. The castle is a ruin now, the papal court long gone back to Rome, but the wines that bear the pope's coat of arms emblazoned on the bottles are still produced more or less according to the long-standing recipe. Not every winemaker uses all 13 of the grapes in the prescribed blend, though.”

The wines grow on a soil that is a mixture of large quartz stones (galets roulés) and sandy red clay. The large sun-warmed galets roulés reflect the sunlight and diffuse a gentle, provençal heat that helps the grapes to mature and their juice to concentrate. A very strong southern wind - the Mistral - whips up through the Rhône valley from the Mediterranean Sea and creates a welcome cooling effect, since the region can be pretty hot and dry.

With more than 8,000 acres under vine, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the largest appellation in the Rhône. It was the first wine region in France to gain AOC (today AOP) status in 1936.

Remembering Rudi Wiest, Legendary German Wine Importer in California, USA

German Wine Institute (DWI) 24.03.25

Renowned German wine importer Rudi Wiest passed away on March 9, 2025, at 88 years old. Wiest is regarded as one of the most impactful figures in German wine’s success in the United States.

The German Wine Institute (DWI) appointed Wiest as a U.S. Riesling Fellow in 2017 — the first time a recipient was awarded the honor in the United States — for his passion, dedication and advocacy for German wine in the United States.

"To this day, we are infinitely grateful to Rudi Wiest for everything he has done for German Riesling and German wine in the USA. His work has made a decisive contribution to promoting the image and thus also the sales of German wines in our most important export market,” says DWI Managing Director Monika Reule in retrospect."

Wiest worked tirelessly

Wiest was born in Germany in 1936, moving to America with his family at the age of 16. After serving in the U.S. Air Force and becoming a citizen of the United States, Wiest discovered his passion — and obsession — for wine.

Rudi Wiest Selections was established in 1978 and included five founding producers: Mönchhof, Milz, S.A. Prüm, Vereinigte Hospitien and Zilliken. Wiest worked tirelessly to elevate the perception of German wines and expand his impressive portfolio.

Spin doctor for German wine

Over 40 years, Wiest and team brought attention to many esteemed estates and is best known for introducing the U.S. market to Egon Müller, JJ Prüm and Karthäuserhof as outstanding examples of German wine.

Beyond his company’s powerhouse line-up of producers, Wiest brought attention to Germany’s underappreciated offerings, like dry Riesling and Pinot Noir. He is also credited with successfully urging German producers to simplify their wine labels, especially at lower price points, in order to appeal to a wider audience.

The success story lives on

Today, Wiest’s legacy lives on through The German Wine Collection (GWC). Founded by Jenna Fields in 2019, who worked alongside Wiest and considers him a mentor, the GWC aims to continue Wiest’s legacy and preserve the US-representation of reknown estates under one company.

Tasting Château de Beaucastel Wines at Boutique Famille Perrin in the Village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape - Rhône Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours

we went back to Châteauneuf-du-Pape for lunch.

Before lunch, we had an appointment in the Boutique Famille Parrin, right in the center of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, to taste 5 Château de Beaucastel wines, which is owned by the Perrin family.

Some of the truly great Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are produced at Château de Beaucastel. Château de Beaucastel was under construction and we could unfortunately not visit the estate in Courthézon at the northern outskirts of Châteauneuf-du-Pape this time. But Annette organized a tasting of Château Beaucastel wines at the boutique in the heart of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Château de Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel was first mentioned in 1549 and came into the possession of the Perrin family in 1909 when scientist Pierre Perrin inherited the estate. Perrin's grandchildren, François and Jean-Pierre, founded the Famille Perrin business together before passing on the reins two years later to the fifth-generation Pierre Perrin in 1999.

In addition to its renowned Château de Beaucastel estate, Famille Perrin's portfolio includes Miraval, Domaine du Clos des Tourelles and La Vielle Ferme, established as a brand in the 1970s.

Today the Perrin family is the largest vineyard owner of the Southern Rhône and has properties in the best terroirs of the valley including the famous lieu dit ‘La Crau’. They were pioneers in organic farming when they implemented these ideas in 1953 and they started biodynamic vineyard management in 1970. They also were the first to believe in the potential of growing Southern Rhône grape varietals in Paso Robles in the US. They teamed up with Robert Haas of Vineyard Brands who was their US importer. Together they established the Tablas Creek winery in Paso Robles, California.

Château de Beaucastel - wine searcher

Château de Beaucastel is a wine producer based in Courthézon, in the northern Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhône. It makes some of the most famous wines in the whole of the Rhône Valley, from a classic southern Rhône blend that includes Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, as well as the lesser-known Counoise and Cinsaut varieties.

The estate reportedly dates back to 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel bought a barn and a plot of vineyards in the region and inscribed his family's crest onto the walls. The land passed through the family until 1909, when it came under control of scientist Pierre Perrin.

Today, Perrin's grandsons Jean-Pierre and François run the estate.

The château is located in the northeast corner of the appellation, just southeast of the city of Orange. There are around 100 hectares (250 acres) planted to vine, three-quarters of which is used to make the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC wines.

Château de Beaucastel has all 13 of the permitted grape varieties for Châteauneuf-du-Pape planted in the vineyard (Bourboulenc; Brun Argenté/Vaccarèse; Cinsault; Clairette Blanc and Rose; Counoise; Grenache Blanc, Gris and Noir; Mourvèdre; Muscardin; Picardan; Piquepoul Blanc Gris and Noir; Roussanne; Syrah; and Terret Noir), giving the winemaking team a choice of fruit at harvest.

The vines, which are up to 50 years old, are planted on a combination of sandstone, rocks and limestone, which drain freely, helping the vines produce concentrated berries.

The grapes are hand-picked and are vinified in lots to provide consistency for blending, and oak is used sparingly. Château de Beaucastel's flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine is predominantly made from Grenache and Mourvèdre, with a range of other grape varieties, including a portion of white grapes.

There is also a Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc, which is made predominantly from Roussanne with Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc. Château de Beaucastel also makes a varietal Roussanne, and a Mourvèdre-based red wine called Hommage à Jacques Perrin in honor of the current proprietors' father.
