Cellar Tour and Tasting at Caveau Ferraton Père & Fils in Tain L’Heremitage, with Jerome Nuss - Rhône Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours

Rhône Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours led by Annette Schiller took place from October 13 - October 23. The tour started in Lyon and ended in Châteauneuf-du-Pap/ Avignon. There were 8 of us including Annette and me.

The Rhône Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in France, and the second largest after Bordeaux. The Greeks introduced viticulture in the 4th century BC. Later the Romans came and brought viticulture to a different level. Since then the world has discovered Rhône wines and some of the most famous wines come from the Rhône Valley. The vineyards are located on both sides of the river. The Rhône Valley is divided into two distinctively different regions: the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône.

This was the second of three days we spent in the Northern Rhône.

We started the day in Tain L'Hermitage right at the banks of the Rhône river at Ferraton Père & Fils, an elite winemaker of the Northern Rhône. Jerome Nuss showed us the wine cellar and led a tasting in the tasting room. The wines are available in the USA through @Sera Wine Imports.

Today, Ferraton must be counted among the absolute winemaking elite of the Northern Rhône. Only a few manage to consistently bring such top qualities to the bottle. The strict biodynamics combined with the consistent parcel concept make Ferraton in Tain-l’Hermitage unique! I quote our friend Heiner Lobenberg, a prominent importer of wines of the upper echalon: “Ferraton was founded in 1946 by Jean Orëns Ferraton. He came from a family of winemakers, but the business and work structures were different back then. Only with this step did the actual, own winery come about. The second generation put Ferraton on the world wine map by expanding the vineyard area to include a few plots in Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. Organic since 1998. The switch to Biodynamic came quite quickly afterwards. The practical implementation of this system was carried out with the help of a family friend, Michel Chapoutier. A pioneering position emerged. The recent history of the winery is also influenced by oenologists. At the beginning of 2004, Samuel, then the fourth Ferraton generation, decided to hire a new
oenologist. He chose Gregory Viennois, who at that time was still an employee and companion of Stephane Derenoncourt, the well-known wine consultant from Bordeaux. Sure, a biodynamicist! The first vintage produced at Ferraton under Gregory's supervision was phenomenal. The yield limit for all Hermitage wines slipped to less than 10 hectoliters per hectare; the other locations do not exceed 20 hectoliters per hectare either. Initially, Ferraton was shocked by the small quantities. After tasting the wines, the mood suddenly changed, and Gregory Viennois was praised to the Olympus of winemakers.”

The land and the people who tend it share the same history. A history which grows from generation to generation. At the origin, one man, Jean Orëns Ferraton. Vigneron, and son of a vigneron. A region basked in sun, the Rhône Valley. It was 1946. The story begins. Michel, his son, inherited the same passion. He decided to give a new dimension to his father’s vineyards. The first Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph Ferraton were brought into the world. A close friend of the Ferratons’, Michel Chapoutier, brought his know-how. In 1998, the vineyards were converted to organic viticulture, then certified. Before embracing the culture of bio-dynamics. An audacious step, for innovative and strong perspectives.
