12 German Wines in James Suckling Top 100 Wines of the World 2024

James Suckling released his Top 100 Wines of the World 2024. Wile Germany accounts only for 1 percent of world wine output, this year James Suckling's list contains 12 German wines.

James Suckling: German wines are well represented in our Top 100 Wines of the World 2024 report, with 12 standouts showcasing the exceptional quality of the hot, dry 2023 vintage. Senior Editor Stuart Pigott, who has devoted his career to covering German wine since the late 1980s, was particularly enthusiastic about 2023's offerings. According to Stuart, it may go down as one of the finest vintages in history for the country's wines. Our No. 2 wine, the Künstler Riesling Rheingau Hölle GG 2023, is praised as a prime example of what Germany's site-specific dry rieslings can achieve in a great year. 

The main criteria for picking our wines for the Top 100 World Wines 2024 list, as well as for our Top 100 country lists coming over the next two months, were quality and price, followed by what we call the “wow factor” – the emotional response a great wine elicits. Most of the wines on the list are rated 99 or 100 points, but there are several 98- and 97-pointers at more reasonable prices, with nine of the wines between $30 and $60 a bottle.

Wines on our Top 100 World Wines list have a minimum production of 5,000 bottles and a median Wine-Searcher price of less than $500. A few wines may not yet be on the market but will be soon. In the past, we made exceptions for wines such as the forthcoming Brunello di Montalcinos, but we no longer do so.
