Kalk&Kegel, a Graz-based Austrian Gourmet Journal, has been releasing an annual list of the most influenial winemakers of Austria for a number of years, the last one in 2023.

Criteria for the inclusion in the KALK&KEGEL list are the unmistakable craftsmanship of the winegrowers and the exemplary attitude towards nature, which in almost all cases requires at least organic certification or very often biodynamic certification.

The list was compiled by about 30 of Austria's best sommeliers.

Now, Kalk&Kegel has released a similar list for Germany. The list comprises 90 producers and was compiled by around 50 of the best German sommeliers. 

“The wineries on the KALK&KEGEL list represent the state of the art in wine and are at the forefront of a development for precise wine stylistics, sustainable use of the soil and a reduction of technology to a minimum,” says KALK&KEGEL publisher Michael Pöcheim-Pech. The KALK&KEGEL Germany 2024 list includes garage winemakers as well as big names, international stars, but also insider tips and newcomers. Pöcheim-Pech: “We see this list as a valuable recommendation for the catering industry. These wineries should not be missing from any wine list in Germany."
