Germany Rhein-Mosel-Nahe 2024 by ombiasy WineTours took place from August 28 – Friday, September 06, 2024. We spent 10 days visiting top wine estates in five wine regions, tasting fabulous Rieslings and Pinot Noir (aka Spätburgunder), meeting world-renowned wine makers, travelling through the world’smost beautiful wine regions, cruising on the romantic Rhein river, looking at dizzying steep vineyards along the Rhein and Mosel rivers, and delving deep into German history and culture: Rheinhessen • Rheingau • Mittelrhein • Mosel • Nahe

we went to Restaurant Allendorf am Rhein, a trendy restaurant right on the banks of the Rhein river, which belongs to Weingut Familie Allendorf.

There, we bumbed into the Allendorf family, who also had lunch there. Max J. Schönleber came over and said "hello", followed by Ulrich Allendorf, who came with two bottles of Weingut Allendorf GGs and did an impromptu tasting with us. Thank you very much Max and Ulrich.

Ulrich Allendorf comes to Washington DC on a regular basis, as part of the Derek Vinnicombe Group. Last time I saw him was at Arrowine, a stone's throw away from where we live in the Washington DC area.

Weingut Allendorf in Oestrich Winkel

Weingut Allendorf is a well-respected wine estate in Oestrich Winkel in the heart of the Rheingau. Producing wine has a long tradition in the family: Knight Kraft von Allendorf was mentioned in 1222. In 1773, Philipp Anton von Allendorf married a daughter of a local wine grower and the family started making wine.

Notwithstanding the long tradition, in 1955, Fritz Allendorf, owned only 1,5 hectares of vineyard. Today, the family owns 70 hectares – and is one of the largest family-owned wineries in Germany.

Weingut Allendorf’s vinyards include Hinterkirch and Höllenberg (Assmannshausen), Mäuerchen, Mönchspfad (Geisenheim), Klosterberg and Lenchen (Oestrich), Berg Roseneck, Berg Rottland (Rüdesheim), as well as Hasensprung and Jesuitengarten (Winkel). Annual production is around 500.000 bottles. The grape varieties are Riesling (75%), Chardonnay and Spätburgunder.

 

Weingut Allendorf is a member of the VDP, the association of elite winemakers in Germany.

Today, Weingut Allendorf is led by Ulrich Allendorf and his sister Christel Schönleber; her husband Josef Schönleber and her son Max are the winemakers.

 

Ulrich Allendorf: Even as a small boy Uli’s dream was to be a winemaker. And the passion for the craft of this cosmopolitan lateral thinker is unswerving as he travels the world representing the family brand. Uli began managing the wine estate in 1996 following the sudden death of his father, Fritz. The graduate oenologist is the driving force behind enhancing the quality and style of the wine, supported by his nephew Max, and brother-in-law Josef. Uli loves mature Rieslings and always has time to illustrate to visitors the different varieties of the Rieslings with a touch of humour.

Josef Schönleber: Josef has been crafting wines in the Allendorf cellar for over three decades and is now setting new accents with his son. He dedicates all his time and energy into supervising the large expanse of vineyards and organises operations. But the best view of the wine estate’s finest sites are from a boat: Josef enjoys this perspective – as often as work permits, avoiding hustle and bustle, and in peace. Because at work he’s the one who makes sure Max has enough time to attend to his duties. Josef is particularly proud of his “Quercus” Pinot Noir, which he has been maturing in barriques since the 1990s and has, to date, created a respectable number of bottles.

Max Schönleber: Max has been in the family business since 2012, incorporating the diverse experiences he gained during his apprenticeships at well known companies and his degree in oenology in Geisenheim. He has a very clear vision of how the individual sites are to be interpreted and how to craft an individual style for the Allendorf wines. The quest for perfection, craftsmanship, enough time and the patience to recognise the signs of nature are the principles he works on. The development of the Spätburgunder is influenced by his father’s many years of experience and knowledge gained during his apprenticeship at Bernhard Huber’s.
