Germany Rhein-Mosel-Nahe 2024 by ombiasy WineTours took place from August 28 – Friday, September 06, 2024. We spent 10 days visiting top wine estates in five wine regions, tasting fabulous Rieslings and Pinot Noir (aka Spätburgunder), meeting world-renowned wine makers, travelling through the world’smost beautiful wine regions, cruising on the romantic Rhein river, looking at dizzying steep vineyards along the Rhein and Mosel rivers, and delving deep into German history and culture: Rheinhessen • Rheingau • Mittelrhein • Mosel • Nahe
Today, in the afternoon, we explored the Mittelrhein wine region, arguably the wine world’s most spectacular scenery with medieval villages and castles and ruins crowing the top of the hills like pearls
on a string. This is the 65 km stretch of the romantic Middle Rhine Valley with vineyards on vertiginous steep slopes on both sides of the river between Bingen and Bonn. With 1150 acres under vine it is Germany’s second to smallest wine region, planted predominantly with Riesling.
The short journey from Assmannshausen (Weingut August Kesseler) to Oberwesel (Weingut Lanius Knabin) involved a ferry ride across the Rhine river. There is no bridge across the Rhine river for some 70 miles between Mainz and Koblenz to not destroy the beauty of the Rhine valley. This region is a UNESCO world heritage site.
The Lanius family operates a ‘Straußwirtschaft’ and we first had a typical homemade lunch paired with Lanius wines. This was followed by a formal tasting. At the end, Jörg Lanius took us to his vineyards from where we had a breathtaking view of the Rhein valley.
Weingut Lanius Knab (VDP) in Oberwesel, Mittelrhein
The Lanius family started growing wine 250 years ago. Today Jörg Lanius is running the estate and he was the first one to concentrate entirely on winemaking. Weingut Lanius is a fairly small estate with 27 acres under vine in only very steep, top hillside vineyards where manual work is essential.
Riesling accounts for 92% of the plantings, the rest is Pinot Noir. The soils are weathered slate, scattered patches of greywacke and colored sandstone. Their top vineyard site is the Grosse Lage – 1er cru Oberweseler Oelsberg, a south-east facing extremely steep site right above the Rhein river.
Over 30 years ago Jörg Lanius brought back this prime vineyard after it lay fallow for a long time. Here
you still find rare ungrafted Riesling vines which are among the oldest in the entire Mittelrhein region. The berries on these 2000 vines have an incredible concentration and aroma. The manual labor in the Oelsberg is rewarded with a breathtaking view of the village of Oberwesel and the Rhein gorge below.
