“Daniel Wagner and Oliver Müller produce pure dry wines according to the new style spread by the young producers of the region" - SIYPS (Dublin)

Co-winemaker Oliver Müller and Cathrin Wagner were our hosts. Daniel Wagner was working in the vineyard.

Cathrin Wagner showed us the wine cellar and Oliver Müller conducted a tasting for us. Our visit coincided with the "Open House Weekend" of Weingut Wagner-Stempel.

Weingut Wagner Stempel is a family business with history dating back to 1845 in Siefersheim, in the far northwestern corner of the Rheinhessen wine region.. This estate is currently run by the 9th generation of Stempel.

Daniel Wagner is the 9th generation of this estate. When Daniel took over he decided to build on the tradition of classic wine production and to pay special attention to the once famous vineyard sites Höllberg and Heerkretz that were somewhat under the radar for the past fifty years.  Meticulous work in the vineyards and care given to the vines are the basis of high quality production.

The Siefersheim sites are carved out of volcanic hills, giving poor soils based on volcanic stone also known as porphyr. This typical soil gives wines even more mineral flavours.

Daniel’s thrive for precision and quality gets awarded with 4 grapes in the Gault-Millau WeinGuide Deutschland.

Weingut Wagner-Stempel is represented in the USA by Rudi Wiest.

In the Gault Millau / German Wine Guide the estate was voted newcomer of the year in 2009. The estate is a very recent addition to our portfolio. It dates back to 1845 and is currently in its 9th generation.

The idyllic delightful inner courtyard with its imposing chestnut tree was expanded in the early 90’s to include a painstakingly and lovingly restored guest house. At the same time Daniel Wagner decided to build on the tradition of classic wine production and restore the previously famed vineyard sites Höllberg and Heerkretz (ripens two week later) to their former glory. Restoring is an understatement. More meticulous and well-groomed vineyards can seldom be found! They are planted 50% to Riesling but there are also significant plantings to Pinot Blanc and Silvaner and 14% to red varietals such as Pinot Noir and St. Laurent.

The Siefersheim sites are carved out of volcanic hills; the soil is poor in nutrients and consists of volcanic stone also known as porphyr or the more modern expression ryolith, actually quite similar to the Schlossböckelheim sites in the Nahe. 95% of the production is dry. The wines bring amazing mineral drive to the palate!

The estate produces 10,000 cases annually, works organic and is a member of the VDP.

The wine village of Siefersheim lies in the northwestern corner of Rheinhessen, surrounded by steep hills of volcanic origin. The foundation of the Wagner estate was laid in 1845. From a traditional mixed family farm evolved a wine estate of high standing. The sites Hölberg and Heerkretz achieved recognition beyond the borders of the region in the first decades of the 20th century. The family has been involved in viticulture for nine generations. Daniel Wagner focuses on the traditional grape varieties Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, and above all, Riesling. He practices labor-intensive organic viticulture. His wines have numbered among the region’s finest for years.
