Hubert Trimbach, senior boss of Maison Trimbach, Ribeauvillé, Alsace, France, died earlier this month at age 85.

Annette and I have enjoyed many Trimbach winemaker dinners, mostly with Jean Trimbach, in the Washington DC area and have visited Trimbach in Alsacae several times on wine tours by ombiasy. At one wine tour, the late Hubert Trimbach was our host.

Trimbach

Dear Friends,

It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our brother, uncle and great uncle, Hubert Trimbach.

Did you not know about him? Here is a far too short summary of his involvement in the family field.

In 1963, Hubert joined his older brother Bernard at his departure from HEC Paris. He sees opportunities abroad, so he begins to travel the world for more than 50 years. Hubert was an extraordinary Great Man, and to this day, his name makes more connoisseurs dream. He promoted Trimbach wines and was a fabulous Ambassador for the region.

He must have traveled thousands of miles, by plane, in Concorde, by train, by boat, by car or even by walking, galloping through the streets of the furthest countries in Alsace to visit clients. He was a tireless traveler.

Fervent passionate about wines, great Ambassador of Alsace, very good singer whenever the occasion came, and admirable dancer, he encouraged dinners or tastings like no one else. Charming and charming, funny, intelligent, charismatic, he was a real orator, he was admired only qualities and talent.

Under his look convinced and sometimes a little strict, he let through great generosity and a big heart.

All of his friends agree he was always ready to lend a hand to anyone who would show motivation. How many chefs, sommeliers, wine people have had his support and kind advice!

He will leave a huge void in our family, the wine world, and among the friendships he built over the years of his career and life.

We hope to live up to continue to pass on what He has built, as humbly as He knew so well, for generations and generations to come.

There are so many amazing and emotional comments on Facebook and Instagram. They go straight to our Heart, thank you all, and we are sure Hubert is delighted to see that from where he is. Just a few we love:

« Hubert was a wonderful person & a credit to the wine industry. I had many great times working, traveling & having his great wines with many fine dinners with Hubert. Rest in Peace my old friend. »

« Such a great personality. One of its kind! »

« Le cinéma a ses monstres sacrés, le vin d’Alsace a aussi ses ambassadeurs qui ont su faire rayonner la région sur toute la planète dans la seconde partie du 20e siècle. Hubert Trimbach aura construit et transmis, comme ses pairs. »

« Le prince Hubert comme l'appelait ses confrères, était une personnalité attachante, je me souviens qu'un de mes amis américains lui avait serré la main avec le même effet que si cela avait été le Général De Gaulle... »

Maison Trimbach - wine-searcher

Maison Trimbach is one of the oldest wineries in the French wine region of Alsace. Dating back to 1626, Trimbach is well-known for its Riesling wines. In particular, one made from the small Clos Sainte Hune vineyard, which is considered one of the finest Alsatian expressions of the grape.

Alongside Riesling, Trimbach has a range of classic Alsace varieties within its wine portfolio. These include Sylvaner, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Pinot Noir. The collection covers a range of styles, but dry, ageworthy wines with great minerality are Trimbach's specialty. The house makes a few Vendages Tardives and Selection de Grains Nobles wines, as well as some Eaux-de-Vie in select vintages.

Located in Ribeauville,Trimbach is surrounded by limestone- and fossil-rich vineyards protected by the Vosges Mountains.Trimbach has plots in several grand cru vineyards, including Geisberg and Osterberg.

The most important plot is the walled Clos Sainte Hune vineyard, which lies within the larger Rosacker Grand Cru vineyard of Hunawihr. This plot has been in the family for more than 200 years and produces wine with high minerality and ageability. Even though this wine comes from a grand cru vineyard, it is not labelled as such; Trimbach has shunned the title in favor of the prestigious Clos Sainte Hune name.

The house has been in the Trimbach family for centuries. Frédéric Emile Trimbach received the highest distinction for his wines at the International Wine Fair in Brussels in 1898, this was a pivotal point for the success and notoriety of the brand. In 1920, Frédéric Théodore, his son, moved the family business to Ribeauville to make way for expansion. The house is still located there today under the leadership of the 12th and 13th generations: Hubert Trimbach, his daughter Anne and his nephews Jean and Pierre.
