Today, we explored the Mittelrhein wine region, arguably the wine world’s most spectacular scenery with medieval villages and castles and ruins crowning the top of the hills like pearls on a string. This is the 65 km stretch of the romantic Middle Rhine Valley with vineyards on vertiginous steep slopes on both sides of the river between Bingen and Bonn. With 1150 acres under vine it is Germany’s second to smallest wine region, planted predominantly with Riesling.

After we had crossed the Rhine River by ferry boat, we drove a few miles tos Burghotel-Restaurant Auf Schönburg, a lovingly restored castle which dates back to the year 966, where we had lunch.

The vicinity of the medieval town of Oberwesel is known for its excellent Rhine wines. Steeply sloped vineyards cover the hills. Nature in the Oberes Mittelrheintal is dazzling and listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Here, high above the Rhine valley, lies Burghotel-Restaurant Auf Schönburg. A lovingly restored castle which dates back to the year 966. One look at the photo of this castle hotel in enough to see that it is a bucket-list experience. The rooms have been restored with an eye for detail and for the castle’s history: they feature four-poster beds, alcoves, stained-glass windows, plastered ceilings and balconies with views over the meandering Rhine. The kitchen is well stocked with seasonal and regional produce and the cellar holds the very best regional wines.
At Burghotel auf Schönburg, you can enjoy à la carte lunches and dinners in the “Zum Mundschenk” restaurant, where candlelight and historic details create a unique castle ambiance. On sunny days, the terraces offer breathtaking views of the Rhine - perfect for a relaxing meal outdoors. The kitchen focuses on seasonal regional products and serves both classic Hunsrück specialties and international favorites, complemented by attractive arrangements for a complete culinary experience. For a more informal evening, visit the Schönburger Weinstuben, where you can share and discover a variety of refined small dishes together. The carefully curated wine list offers a wide selection of regional and international wines. End your evening in the cozy Kaminzimmer, where you can unwind by the fireplace with a fine glass of wine.
