Surprise Lunch at Seafood Restaurant "Poseidon am Viktualienmarkt" in Munich, Germany (September 2026)

Friends from the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar / American Wine Society, Randolph Clarke and Sandra Hoexter, are also in Munich currently and we agreed by email to have dinner together at our temporary home (the house of Chris Tremann and Cornelia Schiller Tremann) in Schwabing. To buy cheese for the dinner Annette Schiller and I went to the Victualienmarkt this morning, where, what a surprise!, we run into Randy and Sandy, when they were having lunch at Poseidon am Viktualienmarkt, at the recommendation of JK and Janet Cam.

Operated as fresh seafood counter and a lively, Mediterranean-style eatery, the ambiance there is highly reminiscent of a bustling seafood market bistro in Marseille or Barcelona. You can either buy premium raw seafood to eat at home or pull up a seat to eat directly on-site.

We joined them and had a lovely lunch together. Sandy and I both chose the Bouillabaise, one of Poseidon's signature dishes, with a fresh Muscadet from the Loire valley.

Poseidon

Quality, Tradition and Family Values

Our bistro with fish counter has been an integral part of Munich’s Viktualienmarkt since 1984 – a true Munich original and the go-to address for fresh fish and seafood in the city. What began as a pure fish stall at the Viktualienmarkt has evolved over the years into a popular bistro that today perfectly combines both worlds: day-fresh seafood and delicious fish dishes.

Who We Are – The Mergen Family

We are the Mergen family: mother Gabi, father Pierre and son Marcel. For more than 20 years, we have been running both the bistro and the fish counter, working together every day to offer our guests the freshest seafood from around the world – from sea urchin from Iceland to king salmon from New Zealand. We are particularly proud that our selection is based on sustainable fishing practices, including both wild-caught fish and responsibly farmed aquaculture. We are the family-run fish business in Munich, whre quality meets fair prices.

Popular Fish Dishes and Daily Specials

Our classics, like the Bouillabaisse with Rouille or the Spaghetti with seafood à la Pierre Mergen, have been crowd favorites for years and continue to delight all generations. To keep things exciting, we also offer daily changing specials, prepared right in our open kitchen. In the summer, our sunny terrace invites you to enjoy your meal outdoors with a view of the Viktualienmarkt – ideally with a good glass of wine. Whether you dine with us or buy fresh fish in Munich, we stand for the highest quality and sustainability – and have done so for over 40 years.

Bon Appétit!

Seafood Restaurants at the Viktualienmarkt

The absolute best and most famous fish restaurant directly at the Viktualienmarkt is Fisch Witte. It is a highly cherished Munich institution operating as both a premium fish monger and a gourmet bistro.

Right alongside it, Poseidon am Viktualienmarkt is an equally exceptional top-tier choice located just steps away from the market stalls.

Fisch Witte (The Premium Icon)

This is the place to go if you want a quintessential, slightly upscale Viktualienmarkt experience. You sit tightly packed at bistro tables, often enjoying a glass of champagne alongside your food.

The Food: You can choose your fish raw directly from their massive showcase counter to be grilled fresh on the spot.

Reviewers heavily praise their Seafood Soup and rich Bouillabaisse.

Good to Know: It gets incredibly crowded during peak hours. Lunch reservations are highly recommended.

Poseidon am Viktualienmarkt (The Local Secret)

Located on the edge of the market, Poseidon feels like a hidden slice of Marseille or Barcelona dropped into Munich. It operates as a cozy fish shop with a fantastic open-kitchen bistro.

The Food: Known for incredibly fresh Belon and Gillardeau oysters, perfectly al dente seafood pasta, and beautifully charred swordfish steaks.

Good to Know: The atmosphere is a bit more relaxed and less "posh" than Fisch Witte, making it perfect for a casual but top-tier seafood lunch.

Nordsee Viktualienmarkt (The Quick Budget Choice)

While Nordsee is a widespread German fast-food chain, this specific location at the market is their oldest branch and features a special exclusive gourmet bar counter.

The Food: While one side handles quick takeaway fish sandwiches (like the Bremer or Matjes-Baguette), the gourmet counter cooks up fresh grilled scallops, octopus, and oysters right in front of you.

Good to Know: It is completely self-service with no formal table seating, making it best for a fast, budget-friendly market bite.
