Invitation: The Red Wine Portfolio of the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, Finger Lakes, Presented by Annette Schiller at the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar on Tuesday, December 3rd 2024 at 7.45 pm, Washington DC, USA

Dear wine friends,

I invite you to join me next Tuesday, December 3rd at 7.45 pm when we do a “tour d’horizon” through 5 different vitis vinifera red grape varieties.

Dr. Konstantin Frank is the pioneer planting vitis vinifera grapes in the US. He came from an ethnic German family in Odessa, a beautiful coastal town in Ukraine on the shore of the Black Sea. He earned his PhD in viticulture from the university of Odessa and became a leading expert on the cultivation of vitis vinifera grape varieties in cold climates throughout Eastern Europe.

He lived through the Tsar Monarchy of Russia, the Russian revolution, the Soviet Union, two world wars, fleeing to Austria, moved to Germany to eventually immigrate to the US in 1951. He found work at Cornell and kept insisting that vitis vinifera grapes could be planted successfully in the Finger Lakes region. Given his experience in much colder Russian and Eastern European territories, he was sure that the climate and soils could bring excellent wines. At that time French hybrid grapes were kings in the Finger Lakes region. Later he was also instrumental to introduce vitis vinifera grapes to California. In 1961 -at age 62- he founded his own business in Hammondsport at Keuka Lake and ever since, beautiful wines are produced at this estate in the Finger Lakes.

Continuing the history and legacy of the Dr. Konstantin Frank winery, 4th generation Meaghan Frank -she holds a masters in viticulture and a Dipl. WSET- is pushing grape varieties not so common in this country.

We will taste 5 wines, two are from grape varieties some of you may have never heard of.

1) Blaufränkisch
2) Saperavi
3) Cabernet-Franc
4) Cabernet-Sauvignon
5) Amur

I am sure you will enjoy all the wines.
Please join me for this very special tasting adventure.
Annette

WHERE & WHEN WE MEET: The Seminar meets at 7:45PM every Tuesday (except for July, August and the weeks of December 25th and January 1st) at St. Patricks Episcopal Church at 4700 Whitehaven Pky, between Foxhall Road and MacArthur Blvd.

No reservations are required.

This posting is based on the invitation prepared by Sandra Cruz, a summary report prepared by Carl Willner and my previous postings on the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery:

German Wine Makers in the World: Dr. Konstantin Frank (USA)

Meaghan, Frederick, Willy and Dr. Konstantin Frank

Meaghan Frank is the fourth generation to run the winery.  She is the great granddaughter of the founder, Dr. Konstantin Frank.  Meaghan earned an MBA in wine business from the University of Adelaide, Australia, a Masters in enology from Cornell University, New York, and the WSET Diploma from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. Meaghan was a most gracious and knowledgeable guide to her family’s vineyard and its varied wines.

Meaghan`s father, Frederick Frank, President of the winery, remains involved. Frederick is a graduate of Cornell University and attended the Geisenheim Research Institute for Viticulture and Enology in Germany.

Frederick took over from his parents, Willy and Margrit Frank. Margrit was borne in Hamburg, Germany, and emigrated as a young woman to the USA, where she met Willy Frank.

Founder Dr. Konstantin Frank (1897 -1985) was born in Europe, Odessa, then part of the Tsarist Russian Empire, now Ukraine into a Russian-German family. Dr. Konstantin Frank ignited the so-called vitis vinifera revolution, which changed the course of wine growing in the Finger Lakes and, more generally, in the north-east of the USA.

Dr. Konstantin Frank earned his Ph.D. in Viticulture in the Ukraine from the University of Odessa. He was 52, when he arrived in the USA. When the first vintage of the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery was released in 1962, he was 63 years old.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery and Germany

Founder Dr. Konstantin Frank was born in the Tsarist Russian Empire into a Russian-German family. The Germans came in waves from the West to Russia and settled there from the 16th century onwards. A big wave of German immigration occurred in the 18th century under Catherine the Great, who herself was a German from Anhalt.

The Frank family belongs to the Black Sea Germans. They settled in the territories of the Black Sea in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was Meaghan`s great great grandfather, who was borne in Germany and followed the invitation to settle in the Black Sea region. The Frank family lived there in a German enclave.

At the time Dr. Konstantin Frank was born, Odessa belonged to the Tsarist Russian Empire. When Dr. Konstantin Frank, surviving the Russian Revolution and two World Wars, left and moved to the USA in 1951, it was part of the Soviet Union.

After the breakdown of the Soviet Union 40 years later, it became Ukraine.

I have met Frederick Frank several times. We always communicated in German. Fred got his wine growing and wine making training in Geisenheim in Germany.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery and the Vitis Vinifery Revolution in the Finger Lakes

With extensive experience growing the vitis vinifera varientals in below freezing temperatures back in his home land, Frank knew it would be possible with the grafting techniques that he developed to plant vitis vinifera varietals in the cool Northern fringes of the North-eastern US. The struggle to do this goes back many centuries.

In the original charter of the 13 colonies was a royal commission to pursue three luxury items that England was unable to provide for itself: wine, silk, and olive oil. Every colony made attempts to satisfy the requirements of its charter, but made only limited progress. The problem was that on the one hand there were the native American grapes. All these native American grapes were cold tolerant and disease and pest resistant, but not that well suited for wine making, due to their coarseness, high tannins, and foxy flavors. On the other hand, the vitis vinifera which settlers brought from Europe, were well suited for wine making, but uniformly unable to survive long enough to produce a crop.

Despite many years of failure, the early Americans persisted in their efforts. And they had some success. A big step forward was made in 1740 when a natural cross pollination occurred between a native American grape and a European vitis vinifera. Other successful crossings followed.

So, only native American grapes and European American hybrids were grown in the Finger Lakes area, when Dr. Konstantin Frank arrived in the United States in 1951, finding work at a Cornell University experimental station in the Finger Lakes region. Having grown vitis vinifera back home in regions so cold that "spit would freeze before touching the ground" Dr. Frank believed that the lack of proper rootstock, not the cold climate, was the reason for the failure of vitis vinifera in the Finger Lakes region. He thought that European grapes could do well on the rolling, well-drained hills around the Finger Lakes provided they were grafted onto early maturing American rootstock.

With the help of the French champagne maker Charles Fournier, Dr. Frank put his ideas into practice. He developed the right root stock and grafted European vitis vinifera on them. He planted these vitis vinifera in the slate soil around Lake Keuka and he opened a winery, Vinifera Wine Cellars, in 1962. Despite his success, other winemakers still doubted him for many years and he had trouble getting New York distributors to handle his wine.

Today, Dr. Konstantin Frank is recognized as having led the revolution in wine quality in New York State and the East Coast.

Meet&Greet (+ Introduction to the Rhône Valley Region) at Grand Hôtel des Terreaux in Lyon and Guided Sightseeing Tour of Lyon - Rhône Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours

Rhône Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours led by Annette Schiller took place from October 13 - October 23. The tour started in Lyon and ended in Châteauneuf-du-Pap/ Avignon. There were 8 of us including Annette and me.

The Rhône Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in France, and the second largest after Bordeaux. The Greeks introduced viticulture in the 4th century BC. Later the Romans came and brought viticulture to a different level. Since then the world has discovered Rhône wines and some of the most famous wines come from the Rhône Valley. The vineyards are located on both sides of the river. The Rhône Valley is divided into two distinctively different regions: the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône.

For an overview see: Overview: Rhône Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours led by Annette Schiller - Facebook Day-by-day Postings

Most of us arrived a day or even more before the tour started. Annette and I arrived on the evening of October 12, coming by train from Frankfurt. As has become a tradition, Annette and I always go to the Le Broc'Bar, a small neighborhood bar we all dream about, just next to our hotel Grand Hôtel des Terreaux. Colorful chairs on the terrace beneath the glow of white lights strung from a large mulberry tree. As always, we had saucisson sec, Saint-Marcellin cheese and a bottle of Rhône rouge. We finished the evening with a beer.

Grand Hôtel des Terreaux

The Grand Hôtel des Terreaux in Lyon is a 4 star Art-Deco hotel in the heart of Old Lyon, the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It combines the atmosphere of an old-fashioned 19th century town house with a modern, innovative décor. It also has a small indoor pool and hot tub.

The tour started at 2pm in the Grand Hôtel des Terreaux with a meet&greet and an introduction to the Rhône wine region by Annette Schiller, followed by a guided sightseeing walking tour of Lyon.

Annette spent the morning preparing for the tour, while I went to one of Lyon's Sunday morning markets, the St. Antoine Market, a large outdoor food market on the banks of the Soane river.

Meet&Greet

Guided Sightseeing Tour of Lyon

Lyon is France’s second largest city with around two million people, and a chic, sharp, savvy, historic, bustling city. It was founded by the Romans in 34 BC, and has been a commercial, industrial, and banking powerhouse for the last five hundred years.

In the 15th century it became Europe’s publishing center, by the mid 18 hundreds it had become Europe’s silk-weaving center, at the dawn of the 20th century it became France’s cineastic center, and today it is a sophisticated city with a dynamic cultural life, a thriving university scene, and France’s gourmet capital
.
The city center lies on the peninsular at the confluence of the Saône and Rhône rivers, the oldest Renaissance part of Lyon is sandwiched between the Saône river and the hillside to the west. Very special are the “Bouchon” simple, very typical Lyonnais restaurants and the “Traboules” interior passageways between houses being established during the “silk” period of Lyon.

Late-night Tasting of older French and Californian Wines, with about 20 Wine Friends, including, Notably, Joel Peterson, the Godfather of Zinfandel, at the American Wine Society National Conference 2024 in in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

The 57th American Wine Society National Conference was held on November 1-3, 2024 at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Attendance was at around 700 wine lovers from all over the USA.

Last year, the 56th American Wine Society National Conference took place in St. Louis/ Missouri. See: The 2023 American Wine Society National Conference in St. Louis/ Missouri/ USA: Seen Through Christian Schiller's Camera Lens

Annette Schiller, President of ombiasy WineTours and member of the American Wine Society, led 2 wine tastings at the 2024 National Conference of the American Wine Society: "Discovery of the Off-the-Beaten-Path Wine Regions of France" and "Germany’s Perfect Home for Pinot Grapes".

In addition, Annette and Christian Schiller poured a selection of German wines at the Showcase of Wines event during the second evening.

The American Wine Society

The American Wine Society was founded in 1967 as a non-profit, educational, consumer-oriented organization for those interested in learning more about all aspects of wine. On October 7, 1967, around 200 grape growers, home winemakers, and wine lovers gathered at Dr. Konstantin Frank’s vineyard on Keuka Lake near Hammondsport, NY for the AWS’ initial meeting.

In December of the same year, the thirteen charter members, led by Founder Dr. Konstantin Frank, met to determine the organization structure of AWS and elect officers. Now in its 49th year, the American Wine Society is the largest consumer based wine education organization in North America. Membership is open to anyone interested in wine and over 21 years of age.

In the early days, AWS members were located primarily in the eastern part of the country. As the society grew , we established chapters throughout the eastern U.S., then into the south and Midwest, and finally into western states. Today, the American Wine Society has over 7,000 members in 45 states and 120 chapters across the U.S.

The 57th American Wine Society National Conference in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Each November the Society hosts a three-day national conference with two full days of nearly 50 educational seminars to choose from. Winery owners, wine educators, and renowned wine makers are selected to present sessions during this national event. In addition, a program educating members to become AWS certified wine judges is conducted on the day preceding the seminars.

The 57th American Wine Society National Conference was held on November 1-3, 2024 at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Attendance was at around 700 wine lovers from all over the USA.

Thursday and Friday were the days of wine judging. There were full-day courses for those who want to become a certified AWS Wine Judge. This is a 3-year program. Also, the Amateur and Commercial Wine Competitions took place on Thursday and earlier in the week.

Saturday and Sunday was filled with about 50 wine seminars, led by winery owners, wine educators, and renowned winemakers. The breakfasts, lunches, dinners and after-dinner gatherings provided ample opportunities to network with other AWS members.
