Château Long-Depaquit is located at the heart of the village of Chablis, in Burgundy’s Yonne department. A stroll through the estate’s grounds, which boast centuries-old trees and a rose garden, offers a unique, timeless experience.

Newly appointed Technical Director Cécilia Trimaille was our host.

Cécilia Trimaille: An exceptional 65-hectare legacy, our vineyards benefit from a sustainable approach to viticulture. Limiting yields and keeping interventions to a minimum during the vinification process help create authentic, mineral, elegant wines. Barrel ageing is used in moderation to best preserve the expression of each terroir.

A new winery was built at the estate in 2014. Not only is it more eco-friendly, it also allows us to continue to improve the quality of our wines by giving them more purity and precision.

History

The origin of the Long-Depaquit domaine goes back to the history of the Abbey of Pontigny, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1114 by monks of Citeaux a few kilometres northwest of Chablis. A few years later, in 1128, the Cistercian monks had already developed their own domaine at Chablis. During the Revolution in 1789, Jean Depaquit, a priest of Pontigny, left the orders and returned to civil life. During the sale of national property, he bought the vineyards of the Abbey, including the famous vineyard of La Moutonne. His son, Benjamin, who had no children, adopted a certain François-Auguste Long, which would lead to the creation of the Long-Depaquit family, owner of the eponymous domaine. The château, built in 1791, is one of the most beautiful buildings of Chablis. Redeemed by the Beaunoise house Albert Bichot in 1970, this magnificent Chablis domaine developed and now covers 65 hectares.

Albert Bichot

Château Long-Depaquit in Chablis is one of the six domains in all of Burgundy, including Beaujolais, belonging to Albert Bichot. The maison Bichot also houses the Clos Frantin (Vosne-Romanée), Château-Gris at Nuits-Saint-Georges, Pavillon (Pommard), Adélie (Mercurey) and Rochegrès at Moulin-à-Vent.

The Bichot family can trace its roots back to 1214. They settled in Burgundy in 1350. In 1831, Bernard Bichot founded a wine trading business. His son bought the first vineyards and grandson Albert Bichot gave the family business the name and settled in the centre of Beaune in 1912. Today it is Albéric Bichot who took over in 1996.

2015 Château Long-Depaquit Montmains Premier Cru

2016 Château Long-Depaquit Les Vaucopins Premier Cru

2016 Château Long-Depaquit Les Vaudésirs Grand Cru

Les Vaudésir is one of the Chablis region's most famous grand crus. It provides some of the best evidence of the erosion that followed the last ice age. Domaine Long-Depaquit owns an enormous south-facing plot featuring great soil diversity. The minerality of this terroir is in perfect keeping with the maturity the southern orientation lends the grapes. This wine is élevaged in stainless steel vats (75%) and 1-5-year-old oak barrels (25%) to lend the wine complexity without overemphasising its woody character. A textbook example of precision.

2016 Château Long-Depaquit Les Clos Grand Cru

Les Clos has a double claim to the title of the "grand cru des grand crus". Firstly, in terms of area: with nearly 25 ha, it is easily the largest. And secondly, in terms of reputation: most experts acknowledge that it produces probably the most accomplished and complete Chablis wines, especially after a decade of ageing. It has a south-southwesterly exposure, and benefits from relatively shallow limestone-rich soils overlying Kimmeridgian marl.
