Wine-Searcher: The World's 10 Most Expensive Rieslings (2019)

The wine-searcher web site contains a list of the world's most expensive Rieslings, based on the data the wine-searcher collects. It is updated daily. Below find a recent snap-shot of the top 10 list.

Interestingly, all 10 wines are from Germany. Except for one wine, which is a dry wine, they are all noble-sweet wines.

Riesling is made in 3 different styles: dry (where you fully ferment the juice to dryness), fruity-sweet (where the winemaker deliberately stops the fermentation to maintain some residual sugar in the wine, like the German Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese wines) and noble-sweet wines (where because of noble rot or frost the grapes are so sugar-intensive that the fermentation stops automatically before all sugar is fermented no matter what the winemaker does). The latter wines are a tiny fraction of the world's Riesling production, less than 1%, but account for 90% of the list below.

5 of the 10 wines come from either Weingut Egon Müller or Weingut J.J. Prüm, the stars of German noble sweet Riesling. The two of them are the only two producers of premium wine in Germany who exclusively make fruity-sweet and noble-sweet wine. I guess 98% of their wines are fruity-sweet and 2% noble-sweet.

6 of the 10 top wines come from the Mosel, 3 from the Rheingau and 1 (the dry one) from Rheinhessen.

Staatsweingut Kloster Eberbach, Graf von Schönborn-Schloss Schönborn and Schloss Reinhartshausen, all with a long history and high reputation, are currently not in the group of elite producers in Germany. They are top producers but, for example, are not in the Gault Millau 5/5 producers list. See: Germany's 20 Top (5/5) Winemakers - The Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland 2019
