Revamped Weingarten in Bockenheim, with Michelin-starred Chef Jan Hofmann - A Place to Watch in Frankfurt, Germany

In Frankfurt, Annette and I are members of a group of wine and food aficiniados that meets about once a month in a top restaurant. In late June, we had dinner at the Weingarten in Bockenheim. Weinsinn.

There were eight of us. We had 10 bottles of wine. Almost all of us had 4 course. We spent Euro 150 including tax and tip per person.

Revamped Weingarten

Since Weingarten was opened in 2007 by Ulrich Karbiersch, who also used to run a wine store, it was a popular place for wine afficionados in Frankfurt. Ulrich poured interesting wines and served delicious wine bar snack food. This has not changed since Ulrich handed over Weingarten to his son Lars earlier this year. But Lars upgraded the place substantially by adding a bistro section to it. It is now a wine bar cum bistro. In terms of the latter, Lars hired Michelin-starred Chef Jan Hoffmann and is now also offering top bistro food at Weingarten. When we were there, some people just had a glass of wine with a snack as in the old days while others, like us, had a meal. In terms of the latter, we had a full meal with 4 courses, while others just had one, two or three course(s).

Dirk Eisel: Fabulous dinner with friends at the recently relaunched and re-opened Weingarten wine bar and bistro in Frankfurt, Germany, which now also offers à la carte dishes cooked by Jan Hoffmann, who was awarded a Michelin Star at Seven Swans Restaurant in 2015, turned it into a exclusively vegetarian restaurant in 2017, retaining the Michelin Star in the process, and took a one-year sabbatical in early 2018. Now he is back with a relaxed bistronomics concept showcasing his skill for inventive, flavourful dishes. The Weingarten also has a great wine list with bottles that you rarely come across in Frankfurt, if at all. Absolute recommendation for wine and food lover

Sommelier Nicolas Buchberger

The sommelier, Nicolas Buchberger, borne in Lyon and raised in Lyon and Paris, impressed us with a deep knowledge of French and German wine. Nicolas has a Bachelor in Philosophy and a Bachelor in International Wine Business from the University of Geisenheim. He worked at wineries in Piedmont, Italy, and the Rhône Valley before joining Weingarten earlier this year.

Chef Jan Hoffmann

When Jan Hoffmann turned 15 he began his apprentice-ship to become a chef in Neuwied, Germany. He received national attention in 2016 when he was awarded a Michelin star as the Executive Chef of Seven Swans in Frankfurt, then turned it into a vegetarian restaurant and defended the star in the following year. At the time, Seven Swans was one of 4 Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe that served only vegetarian cuisine. The way from apprentice-ship in Neuwied to the Michelin star in Frankfurt included stops with Juan Amador, now a 3-star Michelin Chef in Vienna, and Villa Merton in Frankfurt with Chef Matthias Schmidt. Following a sabatical, Jan Hoffmann is now back as chef of the small kitchen of Weingarten with a most interesting bistronomics cuisine.
