Germany Rhein-Mosel-Nahe 2024 by ombiasy WineTours took place from August 28 – Friday, September 06, 2024. We spent 10 days visiting top wine estates in five wine regions, tasting fabulous Rieslings and Pinot Noir (aka Spätburgunder), meeting world-renowned wine makers, travelling through the world’smost beautiful wine regions, cruising on the romantic Rhein river, looking at dizzying steep vineyards along the Rhein and Mosel rivers, and delving deep into German history and culture: Rheinhessen • Rheingau • Mittelrhein • Mosel • Nahe

we went to Weingut Max Ferdinand Richter, an iconic top 20 estate founded in 1680, also widely available in the USA. Senior owner/ winemaker Dirk Richter led us through the portfolio of the estate. Junior owner/ winemaker Constantin Richter was working in the cellar, getting ready for the 2024 harvest. 

Weingut Max Ferdinand Richter in Mülheim, Middle Mosel

The iconic estate of Max Ferd. Richter was founded in 1680 as a wine export company. The estate of Max Ferdinand Richter is still owned by the same family that first purchased vineyards in Brauneberg in 1643. The Richter Estate mansion and its French-Baroque garden were built in 1774. The winery buildings, built in 1880, boast one of the largest fuder oak barrel wine cellars in the Mosel area. 

Max Ferdinand Richter is managed and operated by Dr. Dirk Max Ferd. Richter, the ninth generation of his family. The tenth generation – Constantin Max Ferd. Richter – also works at the estate, continuing the family tradition. Max Ferd. Richter produces world-class Rieslings from some of the most esteemed vineyards in the Mosel. They are owners of two top monopole vineyards: Mülheimer Helenenkloster and Veldenzer Elisenberg. Mülheimer Helenenkloster is considered by many to be among the best Eiswein vineyards in Germany. The possession of Veldenzer Elisenberg dates back to 1813 when ancestor Franz Ludwig Niessen found out that Napoleon Bonaparte planned on uprooting the beloved Veldenz and Mülheim vineyards. He negotiated a personal payment to the General to prevent him from destroying the vineyards. As thanks, the town gave him the entire slope of Veldenzer Elisenberg and it has remained in the family ever since.

Many wineries in #Germany have history dating back hundreds of years, and this month’s #MeetTheWinemaker is no exception.

 

Weingut Max Ferd Richter was founded in the #Mosel in 1680, and is now run by the ninth and tenth generations of the same family! 

 

This producer values rigour and tradition, believing that #wines are made in the #vineyard, not the winery. It therefore prioritises precise handwork, small crop sizes, all-natural fertilisers and #sustainable farming practices. While it may be time-consuming, the wines speak for themselves.

 

You can find its 2021 Riesling Kabinett at Fortnum & Mason which has fresh acidity, delicate citrus aromas, and the hallmark minerality of wines from the Mosel – delicious
