In a historic shift, the legendary Austrian estate F.X. Pichler has launched its first-ever red wine, a Wachauer Pinot Noir. Unveiled by owner and winemaker Lucas Pichler at the VieVinum 2026 wine fair in Vienna, the release marks the very first move into red wine vinification for a winery globally renowned for world-class white wines like Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
Vineyard & Clones
  • The Inspiration: Lucas Pichler models the wine after the finesse and complexity of legendary Burgundian Grand Cru sites from Côte de Nuits. He considers Pinot Noir to be the "red Riesling" for its unparalleled ability to mirror terroir.
  • Vineyard Mapping: The grapes are organically cultivated across 0.55 hectares spanning five distinct sites on the left bank of the Danube, including Loibner Rothenhof, Loibner Burgstall, Dürnsteiner Liebenberg, and Loibner Mühlpoint.
  • The Grafting Process: Beginning in 2020, Pichler used Burgundian Pinot Noir clones (including Dijon clones 777 and 115) sourced from Axel Stiegelmar’s Juris estate, grafting them onto existing Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc vines.
  • Old Vine Support: Around 20% of the final blend utilizes established Pinot Noir grapes (planted in 2005) harvested from the Weissenkirchner Seiberberg vineyard.
Vinification & Style
  • Winemaking Techniques: The grapes are harvested by hand, cooled overnight, and layered with one-third whole bunches. Instead of pumping over, Pichler utilizes gentle punch-downs (pigéage) by hand and foot to maintain an elegant, subtle extraction.
  • The Wood Effect: Spontaneous fermentation takes place in 500-liter French barrels previously used for the winery's top-tier Unendlich Grüner Veltliner. The wine then matures for roughly 9 months in 228-liter Burgundian oak barrels (two-thirds new) before blending and an additional 15 to 18 months of aging.
  • Profile: The resulting style is lean, rather austere, and delicate, with a moderate alcohol content of around 12.5% ABV, emphasizing structural alignment and restrained fruit over opulent flavors.
Vintages & Release Details
  • Release Timeline: The debut vintages—2022 and 2023—will officially go on sale in September 2026.
  • Labeling: It is labeled as "Wachauer Pinot Noir" because the Wachau DAC regulations only permit Pinot Noir at the regional wine level.
  • Limited Production: The release is highly exclusive, yielding only between 2,000 and 2,200 bottles total, alongside a small allocation of magnums. Early critical reviews, such as those from Falstaff, have already awarded the 2023 vintage a high score of 95 points.
Despite this exciting "passion project," Lucas Pichler notes that the expansion is a logical continuation rather than a permanent detour, confirming that the primary focus of the estate will firmly remain on white wine for his generation.
