The Ahr is one of Germany's northernmost wine regions. It is also one of the smallest, with only 1300 acres of vineyards extending only 24 km along the Ahr River as it flows towards the Rhein river just south of Bonn. From Altenahr, in the west, to the spa town Bad Neuenahr, the vines are perched on steep, terraced cliffs of volcanic slate. In the broad eastern end of the valley, the slopes are gentler and the soils are rich in loess. Four out of five bottles of Ahr wine are red: velvety to fiery Pinot Noir and Frühburgunder which we already tasted on our first day in the Franken region. Lively, fresh Riesling is the most common white wine produced here. Producing top wines in this region requires considerable effort. The terrain is extremely rugged. Winemakers sometimes have to climb through rugged rock crevices into extreme steep slopes to tend the vines and harvest the grapes—sometimes in places where only a few rows can be planted side by side. Although the Ahr is the third smallest wine-growing region in Germany, it has the largest contiguous area for growing red wine.

Historisches Gasthaus Sanct Peter - Michelin
The Historisches Gasthaus Sanct Peter was renowned for its wine back in the 13C, when it was the Hof- und Weingut des Kölner Domstifts (estate and vineyard of the Cologne Cathedral Chapter). In that regard, nothing has changed to this day, insofar as this characterful property is run by the Brogsitter family, who have a long tradition of winemaking. With numerous stints at top establishments to his name, chef Sebastian Baumann lives up to the standards of this traditional restaurant by demonstrating clear ambition. His distinctive style comes through in extremely flavourful dishes that are full of clever contrasts, such as "morels, pork belly, prawns, shellfish foam" and "Miéral pigeon, purple curry, radicchio, salted plum". These come as a four- or five-course set menu, but you can also choose à la carte. Take your pick from the extensive wine list, which has a good selection of wines by the glass, including from the restaurant's own vineyard. Waitstaff are confident, cordial and knowledgeable. The chic, elegant room boasts striking features such as the high, gabled ceiling with exposed beams and the Murano chandelier. In summer, there is a lovely terrace. "Gourmet Lunch" is served Thu-Sun.
Where the Ahr Valley Puts Its Terroir on the Table (en Primeur Club)
Approach Walporzheim from the valley floor and the logic of the place becomes clear before you reach the door. The Ahr cuts a narrow corridor through volcanic slate and greywacke, and the vineyards that climb the steep south-facing slopes here produce Pinot Noir, known locally as Spätburgunder, with a depth that surprises visitors expecting something lighter from a region this far north. The Brogsitter estate has been part of this landscape for generations, and Gasthaus Sanct Peter is where that agricultural context translates into a meal. The address on Walporzheimer Strasse places it inside the village itself, within reach of the vines that define the wine list as much as any winemaker's decision. Germany's estate restaurant tradition occupies a distinct position in the country's dining hierarchy. It sits apart from the urban fine dining concentrated in cities like Hamburg or Munich, and it operates on different terms than destination restaurants that have no agricultural identity of their own. The relationship between cellar and kitchen is the organising principle, which means ingredient sourcing is not a marketing posture but a structural reality.
