Founded in 1142, the Kloster Neustift in Brixen, an Augustinian monastery, is a huge complex and also one of the oldest active wineries in the world. A few weeks ago, we went there and enjoyed a wonderful wine tasting during Alto Adige 2026 by Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours headed by Annette Schiller.
This time, the head of the Kloster Neustift - Abbazia di Novacella winery, Werner Waldboth, came to us and poured his high-altitude alpine wines at Arrowine in Arlington. Among others, I bought Kerner, the star of the region, because it is frost-resistant and thrives in the colder sections of the high-altitude slopes.
Invitation by Arrowine

Monastery Tour, Vineyard Tour and Wine Tasting at the Neustift Monastery in Brixen - Alto Adige 2026 by ombiasy WineTours
Alto Adige 2026 by ombiasy WineTours, led by Annette Schiller, took place from Sunday, September 06 - Sunday, September 13, 2026.
Being
the northernmost wine region of Italy, Alto Adige is a very
special place where Italian and German traditions merge. It is a
fascinating and unique region in the Alpes. It boasts of an
extraordinary variety of landscapes: snow-capped mountains in the
Dolomites, fertile valleys, streams, century-old breathtakingly
beautiful towns true to their hybrid Germanic-Italian culture.
During this tour we did not change
hotels. We stayed 7 nights at the famous, beautiful 5-star Art-Nouveau
style Parkhotel Laurin in Bozen.

Augustinian Abbey of Neustift - Eisacktal / Isarco Valley
The Augustinian Abbey of Neustift, known locally as Kloster Neustift, rises at the northern edge of
South Tyrol's wine country near Brixen, where the Eisack (Isarco) river begins its descent from the
Brenner Pass.
Founded in 1142 by Bishop Hartmann of Brixen at the crossroads of two major
medieval routes, Kloster Neustift is one of the oldest wine estates in Europe. The abbey served for
centuries as a hospice for pilgrims traveling to Rome and Jerusalem, and it grew into one of the
largest monastic complexes in the Alps, encompassing a Gothic cloister, a Baroque collegiate
church, and a renowned library.
The harsh climate of the narrow Eisack Valley and vineyards
between 1800 - 2400 ft altitude favor crisp, aromatic white wines. By the seventeenth century the
canons had already begun acquiring warmer vineyard sites near Bozen to diversify into reds.
Today
Neustift farms roughly 70 acres across both regions, producing around 900,000 bottles a year
under the Praepositus premium line, with Sylvaner, Kerner, Müller Thurgau, and Gewürztraminer
among its most celebrated white wines.
