Very special and memorable evening at the tavern of the Historic Kloster Eberbach in the Rheingau in Germany. The monastery was established in 1136 by the Cisterian monks coming from Burgundy. Its Steinberg vineyard is equivalent to Burgundy's famous Clos de Vougeot. Among others we had a 1946 Rauenthaler Bauiken that was in perfect condition. We were guided through the most entertaining evening by Christine Müller, head of Weingut Kloster Eberbach and Julius Wagner, head of @Kloster Eberbach. A memorable evening at one of the most historically significant producers of #worldclass wines in the world.
Invitation
Weingut Kloster Eberbach
Weingut Kloster Eberbach in the Rheingau region of Germany is one of the world's oldest and most historically significant wine producers, founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks.
Historical Significance
Cistercian Foundations: Established in 1136 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the monastery and its monks pioneered viticulture in the steep, previously uncultivated slopes of the Rheingau.
Medieval Wine Empire: During the Middle Ages, Kloster Eberbach operated what was once the largest wine-producing enterprise in Europe.
The Steinberg Monopole: The monks walled in and planted the famous Steinberg vineyard in the 1200s, a 30-hectare monopole vineyard comparable in prestige to Burgundy's Clos de Vougeot.
The Cabinet Cellar: The creation of the Cabinetkeller in the 18th century preserved rare, treasured wines that form one of the world's most valuable historical German wine collections.
Secularization & State Ownership: Following secularization in 1803, the estate passed to the Dukes of Nassau and is today operated as the state-owned Hessische Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach.
Key Profile & Production
Vineyard Holdings: Spans roughly 220 hectares across the Rheingau and Hessian Bergstraße, making it one of Germany's largest vineyard owners.
Primary Varietals: Focuses predominantly on Riesling for white wines and Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) for reds.
VDP Membership: As a founding member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP), the estate remains a pillar of traditional terroir-driven German winemaking.
Modern Facilities: While rooted in nearly 900 years of history, the estate constructed a state-of-the-art modern winery adjacent to the Steinberg vineyard in 2008.
