Pregaming: Austria Wine Dinner - Chef Jacques Cooks for Klaus and his Austrian Wines at La Côte D'Or Café in Arlington, Virginia, USA

Annette's Austria Wine Tour by ombiasy starts on May 28, 2023, in Vienna - in a bit more than 2 weeks.

See: Announcement: Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours - 12 Days: May 28 - June 08, 2023

On the tour, we will visit and taste the wines of a sizable number of Austrian wine producers, including some that are brought to the USA by Klaus Wittauer.

Against this background, Annette an I enjoyed very much the Austrian Wine Dinner at La Côte D'Or Café in Arlington, Virginia: Chef Jacques cooks for Klaus and his Austrian wines.

Chef Jacques prepared French classic modern cuisine for the outstanding wines of Klaus from Austria.

The focus of the dinner was on two wineries, Weingut Steininger in Langenlois in the Kamptal and Weingut Steindorfer in Aptelon at Lake Neusiedle, both of which we will visit on the tour.

Invitation by Chain Bridge Cellars

Sitting in the bar of La Cote d’Or Restaurant a few weeks ago with importer Klaus Wittauer and Chef Jacques Imperato, it was fun to watch Chef taste, react to, and describe the half-dozen Klaus was pouring. But – as one look at the menu below shows – it will be even more fun to taste the dishes Chef Jacques has dreamed up to complement each offering.

Which you can do by joining us, Klaus and Jacques for dinner celebrating the season and Austrian wines on Tuesday, May 2 and Wednesday, May 3. You’ll enjoy a sparkling welcome Grüner Veltliner, a still GV with asparagus, crisp, dry, Riesling with seafood, two bold oak-aged Austrian reds and a very sweet treat to complete the meal. All for $110 per person including everything – tax, tip, and even parking (free in the hotel lot next to the restaurant).

Here’s the full menu and wine list:

While Gathering

Grüner Veltliner Sekt 2018

Asparagus, Brussels sprout hash, white pepper sabayon, kale chips

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Ried Loisium 2018

Salmon, bay scallops’ mousseline in brick dough, leek spinach, tropical beurre blanc

Steininger Riesling Kamptal DAC 2021

Venison Medallion sautéed, blueberry, balsamic vinegar sauce

Mushroom stuffed with parmesan cheese, potato darphin

Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge 2020

Steindorfer St Laurent Reserve 2019

Coconut crème caramel, mango, Britany butter cookie

Steindorfer Beerenauslese Cuvee Klaus 2018

Are any of these dishes “Austrian”? Nope! But will they all complement and intensify the delicious flavors of a great set of Austrian wines? You bet!

And it certainly is a great set of Austrian wines, as we’ve come to count on from any bottle Klaus Wittauer imports. With a lifetime of experience in Austrian wine, a portfolio of top producers in each major region, and boatloads of enthusiasm and good humor, Klaus is the perfect guide to the wines of Austria. You’ll enjoy classics like Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from Kamptal’s Steininger family and a pair of rich (but highly drinkable!) reds from Burgenland’s Steindorfer. And the grand finale sweet wine made by Ernst Steindorfer just for Klaus is not only delicious – it’s the finest value in luxury dessert wine we know of!

A not-to-be-missed Wine & Culture Tour to Austria by ombiasy WineTours: May 28 - June 08, 2023

Annette's Austria Wine Tour by ombiasy starts on May 28, 2023, in Vienna - in a bit more than 2 weeks.

The tour is fully booked. Annette and I went to Austria earlier this year on a pre-tour trip. The photos below are from this tour.

Annette Schiller: I am still over the moon after this trip: I always loved Austria but this time I scrutinized the country with a sharper eye and mind. And yes: Austria is breathtakingly beautiful, the wines are sooo gorgeous, people are friendly and welcoming, the Austrian dialect suggests old school gallantry, Austria’s history is still so alive and its location at the junction between Western and Eastern European countries makes it so interesting, diverse, and unique. For many centuries Austria was one of the three powers in Europe next to the English Royalty in London and the Romanovs in Sankt Petersburg, Russia. Austria’s Habsburg dynasty ruled over half of Europe for many centuries. Despite the fact that Austria has become a fairly small country after WWII - slighter small than Maine - you still feel the power of the past. Vienna is one of the most beautiful capitals with its majestic buildings, huge palaces, thousand year old cathedrals and monasteries, the mighty Danube river, the unique coffee houses where still today the major daily papers are available to feed your train of thought, the world-famous Burgtheater, Opera House, and Vienna Philharmonics, and with the still very present glamour of its famous musicians Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Franz Liszt , Franz Schubert - just to name a few.

Austria is a mostly mountainous country in the Middle / Eastern Alps. In the southernmost Austrian wine region, the Südsteiermark (Southern Styria), you have a truly alpine feeling with vineyards on extremely steep slopes and a view towards stunning mountain peaks. The only flat area is the Pannonian plains east of Lake Neusiedl at the border with Hungary.

We will visit all wine regions in Austria, from the famous Wachau to Styria, and will visit many of the most famous wine estates. Small but beautiful - that is Austrian’s 2000 year old viticulture in an international comparison. Austria is, with France, Italy, Spain, Germany, considered one of the best wine-growing countries in Europe. Austrian wine does one thing better than a lot of other wines: expresses history, site, climate, and vintage. We will taste delicious wines made from international grape varieties as well as grapes deeply rooted in Austria’s viticultural history.
