Tasting the Wines of Louis Jadot with Thibaut Marquis, the US Representative for Louis Jadot, at the John Marshall Chapter of the American Wine Society, September 2023

In September 2023, Thibaut Marquis, the US representative for Louis Jadot, based in New York City, joined us for the monthly tasting of the American Wine Society/ John Marshall Chapter to introduce us to the wines of the iconic Bourgogne producer Louis Jadot.

The John Marschall Capter of the American Wine Society meets at Pearmund Cellars in Broad Run in Virginia. Doug Beakes is the Chapter Chair.

Invitation

Velvety pinot noir and ethereal chardonnay from the soils of Burgundy and its varied and many vineyards! We will be tasting these wines that are among the most captivating in the world.

We are so fortunate to have Thibaut Marquis, the US representative for Louis Jadot, give us a tasting of some of the most interesting and well-known wines from Burgundy.

We will be tasting, among others: Pouilly-Fuissé 1er cru, Chassagne-Montrachet, Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin and Santenay 1er cru.

And to top off the good news with even better news, the tasting fee for this will only be $15/person. Yes, that is correct, because Thibaut is providing many of the wines gratis to the John Marshall chapter. Some of these wines are priced in the $60 range from the distributor, much more at retail.

This will be a sell-out, so register early by sending $15 via paypal (awsbeakes@gmail.com) or zelle (703-626-0313). There are already some of you who have pre-registered and are penciled in, so hurry up all of you and get your name on the list. I will let you know that you have successfully registered within a few days of your payment.

As always, social hour will start at 630pm w/ wines from Burgundy and the presentation will start at 7pm, at Pearmund Cellars. If the weather is nice we may be outside. If not, bring a sweater for the tasting room.

Cheers,
Doug

Title: Dive Deep Into Burgundy With Louis Jadot

Presenters: Thibaut Marquis, North America Export Manager, Louis Jadot and Annette Schiller, Owner, ombiasy PR&WineTours

Abstract: From the tip of Chablis to the toe of Beaujolais, from regional, villages, 1er Cru and Grand Cru appellations, Louis Jadot produces wines that celebrate Burgundy’s diversity, reflecting the natural
differences of soil, aspect and climate. The familiar Bacchus-head label has become the reliable stamp of quality and consistency from what can often be a confusing region. We will take you on a journey that defines Louis Jadot’s 165 years of know-how and expertise in the Burgundy region.

A Journey through Bourgogne with Louis Jadot - Tasting at the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar Presented by Annette Schiller, ombiasy WineTours, and Thibaud Marquis, Louis Jadot

Earlier this year, Annette Schiller and Thibaud Marquis presented 5 wines of Louis Jadot at the weekly tasting of the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar (WWCS), ranging from regional wines to ultra-premium single vineyard wines, white and red. The wines were well received and the presentation highly appreciated by about 75 interested participants.

Louis Jadot (wine-searcher)

Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy's most important wine producers and négociants, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with a portfolio that covers everything from inexpensive Bourgogne and Beaujolais wines to several grand cru wines, from the Côte de Beaune to Chablis. Unsurprisingly, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay feature heavily in the portfolio.

The house was founded in Beaune in 1859 by Louis Jadot, although the first vineyard – Clos de Ursules – was purchased in the 1820s. The headquarters remains in Beaune, although vineyard holdings have increased exponentially.

Louis Jadot owns land in some of Burgundy's most famous vineyards, including Le Musigny, Échezeaux, Chapelle-Chambertin and in the famously fragmented Clos de Vougeot vineyard. Louis Jadot wines are also made in Chambertin, Montrachet, Corton and Romanée-Saint-Vivant.

As well as the sizeable portfolio of wines made under the Louis Jadot label itself, the house also makes wines for Domaine du Duc de Magenta, and for Domaine Gagey. Andre Gagey took over as general manager for Louis Jadot in 1968 and, along with winemaker Jacques Lardière, was often held responsible for building Jadot's high reputation in the 70s and 80s.

The firm was acquired in 1985 by the owners of US wine importer Kobrand, which still owns the company and imports Jadot's wines into the US.

Gagey, whose son Pierre-Henry Gagey took over as president in 1991, died in 1999 and Lardière retired in 2012. Frédéric Barnier, who joined the company in 2010, has since taken over as head winemaker. Thibault Gagey has since joined his father Pierre-Henry at the helm of the firm.

Jadot is also strongly associated with its in-house cooperage and barrel brand, Cadus, which was established in 1996 in the village Ladoix-Serrigny (just outside Beaune) in cooperation with barrel firm Tonnellerie Vicard. In 2013, Vicard sold its stake in the operation to independent French stave mill Canadell.
