Pictures: New Vintage Tasting of the GWS in Washington DC, USA
Dear wine lovers,
This
past Friday the German Wine Society, Capital Chapter, Washington DC,
held its annual “vintage tasting”. Phil Bernstein, GM of MacArthur
Beverages -https://bassins.com/- in DC led the tasting.
The
tasting reviewed the vintage 2024 from the Mosel region but started off
with two Grosse Gewächs (equivalent to Burgundy’s Grand Cru) wines from
the Nahe region: The Halenberg GG of Weingut Emrich-Schönleber and the
Hermannshöhle GG of Weingut Dönnhoff. Per definition the GG wine must be
dry. These two wines are a classic example of the greatness of wines
from the Nahe wine region.
Nine
2024 wines from the Mosel – Weingut Peter Lauer, Hofgut Falkenstein,
Weingut Willi Schäfer, Weingut JJ Prüm, Weingut Alfred Merkelbach -
followed with increasing sweetness levels up to an Auslese wine.
2024
was a very difficult year for the German vintners. Severe frost in the
spring led to devastating consequences in the vineyards: the
early-budding vines were caught off guard and
in many cases never recovered from this blow. Unprecedented rainfall
followed that caused severe flooding and further damages in the
vineyards. This all caused widespread crop losses across the board with
some vintners losing their entire crop. The harvest in the Mosel and
Nahe regions was the lowest in 50 years.
However,
the 2024 vintage turned out to be an exceptional year for the Mosel
region. Many winemakers tell you that the 2024 was an “endless” harvest.
Due to the very difficult weather conditions the grapes ripened
unevenly. This required lots of experience, intensive manual work,
selective picking with many passes during harvest. At the end this led
to an exceptional high quality of the grapes. 2024 ranks among the most
exciting vintages of the last decade. The wines are delicately fruity,
minerally, fresh, very precise, and acidic. It is a classic puristic
cool climate style with finesse, clarity and longevity. The nine wines
we tasted were exquisite examples of this taste profile. I loved all of
them!
During
my upcoming wine tour to Germany we will spend 4 days in the Mosel and
Nahe regions. I am sure that we will taste some of these 2024 wines. I
invite you to come along and review for yourself this spectacular
vintage:
I
wish you a wonderful and fantastic spring Sunday and of course a great
week ahead and: maybe one of the great wines I described above.
Cheers
Annette
