From June 16 to July 3, 2025, Annette and I spent time in wine country Italy, by car.
For an overview of the whole trip, go here: Wine Country Italy - Lake Como, Tuscany, Alto Adige - in the Summer of 2025
Third Stop: Chianti Classico (Tuscany)
From Bolgheri we drove to Chianti Classico and stayed 3 nights at Fattoria e Villa di Rignana.
On the arrival day, we went to the pool and had dinner at La Cantinetta di Rignana.
On the second day, we visited Greve and several Chianti Classico estates. The day ended with dinner again at La Cantinetta di Rignana.
On the third day, we started with an extensive winery visit at our hotel, at Fattoria di Rignana, with owner and winemaker Cosimo Gericke, followed by visits of more wineries in the Chianti Classico region. For dinner, as La Cantinetta di Rignana was closed on that day, we went to Locanda di Poggio al Sole, the restaurant of the Poggio al Sole winery, near Fattoria et Villa di Rignana.
Fattori NittardiI know Nittardi from Frankfurt, Germany, where the owner of Nittardi owns and runs an art gallerie.
Nittardi (wine-searcher)
Fattoria Nittardi is an historic Tuscan estate specializing in the wines of Chianti Classico and Maremma Toscana. Each wine label of the Nittardi portfolio is designed by an artist and the estate includes an extensive sculpture garden.
The original Nittardi Estate is extremely rich in history. It was used as a defensive vantage point between the rival provinces of Siena and Florence in the 12th Century with a fortified tower named Nectar Dei, or the "Nectar of the God", built on the site in 1183.
Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo became the proprietor of the estate in the 16th Century, and while painting the Sistine Chapel, asked his nephew for "two casks of wine rather than eight shirts" from the estate. Michelangelo also asked his nephew to send wine as a "genuine gift to the Pope Julius II". This tradition is still upheld today, with Fattoria Nittardi always giving its first bottles of Nectar Dei to the Pope.
In 1982, the estate was purchased by Peter Femfert and Stefania Canali, who made extensive renovations to the winery and vineyards. They also acquired the Mongibello delle Mandorlaie vineyard in Maremma in 1999, and the 40-year-old Villa Rosa vineyard in Chianti.
The 17 hectares (42 acres) of vines at the Mongibello delle Mandorlaie vineyard comprises Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, among others. This vineyard is the birthplace of Nittardi's Super Tuscan wines, Ad Astra and Nectar Dei, as well as its first white wine made from 100 percent Vermentino.
Fattoria Nittardi's range of Chianti Classico wines includes Belcanto, a Sangiovese-based blend with several local grape varieties including Canaiolo, Colorino and Malvasia Nera. The Casanuova di Nittardi is a single-vineyard Sangiovese whilst the Nittardi Riserva Selezionata is a Merlot – Sangiovese blend only made in the best years. In honor of the estate's connection with Michelangelo, each label of every vintage since 1981 has been designed by a different artist. This has included pieces by Bruno Bruni, Sandra Brandeis Crawford and Giuliano Ghelli.
