Mastrojanni (Touton)

Mastrojanni has been writing history with its wines since 1975, collecting awards from all over the world. Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and men who have believed in it for decades, Mastrojanni has become one of the most respected Montalcino producers. The Mastrojanni winery lies in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the south eastern most corner of Montalcino Municipality, in the Province of Siena. An artistic and architectural heritage, surrounded by the majesty of its natural landscapes and, above all, an area particularly suitable for vine cultivation: the homeland of Brunello.

Intertwining iridescent geologies: clays, millenary cobblestone debris, tuffs and sandstones. The strong salinity of the ground and the temperature range must be carefully understood. The climate is influenced by Mount Amiata, an ancient extinct volcano that stands high above the horizon with its 1 mile height. The estate stretches over 240 acres, 80 of which are cultivated with vines, 42 for Brunello, with vineyards from 8 to 41 years old. The altitude of the vineyards varies from 620 to 1340 feet high. The vine exposure is towards the south-east, with more and less steep slopes.

Sangiovese dominates in the vineyard, being the absolute protagonist of Mastrojanni wines. It is present in the Brunello, the Rosso, in the cru Loreto and in the cru Schiena d’Asino; the latter produced only in extraordinary vintages. With a pinch of imagination and fun, the winery created a "Supertuscan" IGT San Pio, a harmonious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. To conclude with a sweet ending, the Moscadello of Montalcino late harvest Botrys, their golden nectar, a blend of Muscat, Malvasia di Candia and Sauvignon Blanc.

A strong identity, coherence and consistency in quality: these are the values that Mastrojanni has created and cultivated over the years and which enabled the company to stand out among more than 200 wine producers of the Consortium of Brunello di Montalcino wines, with its original and high-quality profile. These values are the result of a passionate, proud and respectful interpretation of nature, tradition and history of the territory.

Mastrojanni (wine searcher)

Mastrojanni is a Tuscan wine estate located at Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the far southeast of the Montalcino municipality, best known for its wines from the Sangiovese grape variety.

Gabriele Mastrojanni founded the estate in 1975, when he purchased the San Pio and Loreto estates and planted the first vines. The combined property now covers 96 hectares, of which 33ha (81.5 of 237 acres) is planted to vineyards. Here, an altitude of 150-420 meters (500-1400 feet) above sea level allows for aspects facing all points of the compass. 17ha (42 acres) of these vines qualify for Brunello di Montalcino.

As well as the Brunello, the portfolio features single-vineyard cuvées from the Loreto and the Schiena d'Asino vineyards. A Rosso di Montalcino completes the roster of Sangiovese wines. San Pio is an IGT Toscana combining 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese, and the range is completed by a passito made from Moscato, Malvasia di Candia and Sauvignon Blanc.

The cellar forms part of the core estate buildings and is partly dug into the hillside. Grapes are mostly fermented in cement tanks, with a selection vinified in wooden vats to extract further tannins from the wood. The wine is then racked into large wooden barrels where it remains for up to 42 months, followed by least six further months in bottle before release.

Since 2008, the estate has been part of Gruppo Illy, best known for its coffee, though Francesco Illy had been owner-winemaker at the neighboring Podere Le Ripi since 1997.

Mastrojanni (With Love from Italy)

Mastrojanni is one of the most prestigious and respected wineries in Montalcino, Tuscany. Founded in 1975 by Gabriele Mastrojanni, the winery is known for its elegant and complex Brunello di Montalcino wines, as well as its other Sangiovese-based wines, such as Rosso di Montalcino.

Mastrojanni’s vineyards are located in the heart of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, on the south-facing slopes of the hill of Montalcino. The soils are composed of galestro, a type of shale that is ideal for growing Sangiovese grapes. The winery’s vineyards are managed sustainably, with a focus on respecting the environment and maintaining the quality of the grapes.

Mastrojanni’s wines are made using traditional methods, with a long fermentation and aging period. The Brunello di Montalcino is aged for at least two years in oak barrels, followed by a further six months of aging in bottle. This aging process allows the wine to develop its complex flavors and aromas.

Mastrojanni’s Brunello di Montalcino is known for its elegance, complexity, and longevity. It is a wine that can be enjoyed young, but it also benefits from aging. The wine has a deep ruby red color and aromas of black cherry, plum, spice, and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with firm tannins and a long, lingering finish.

The Rosso di Montalcino is a younger, more fruit-forward wine than the Brunello, while the Vigorello di Sant’Anna is a more concentrated and age-worthy wine.

Mastrojanni’s wines are enjoyed by wine lovers all over the world, and they have won numerous awards and accolades. The winery is a member of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, and it is committed to producing wines of the highest quality.
