At Kellerei Terlan, or Cantina Terlano, a Highly-regarded Winegrowers' Cooperative in the Alto Adige (South Tyrol) Region of Northern Italy - Wine Country Italy (Lake Como, Tuscany, Alto Adige) in 2025

From June 16 to July 3, 2025, Annette and I spent time in wine country Italy, by car.

For an overview of the whole trip, go here: Wine Country Italy - Lake Como, Tuscany, Alto Adige - in the Summer of 2025

Fifth Stop: Trentino-Alto Adige

The last stop of our Italy wine tour 2025 was the Trentino-Alto Adige region. We stayed 3 nights in Lana at Hotel Tiefenbrunn and 3 nights in Bolzano at Hotel Laurien.

We visited 10 wineries, most of them during the second half of the stop when we were based in Bolzano.
While in Lana, we had a light dinner at Hotel Im Tiefenbrunn in Lana and went out for dinner to Sissi (1 Star Michelin) in Merano and to Gasthaus Appollonia (Bib Gourmand Michelin), up in the mountains, above Nalles.

While in Bolzano, we had dinner at Toma by Lisa (wine bar), Loewengrube in Bolzano (Michelin listed) and Voegele (Bib Gourmand Michelin) in Bolzano.

Kellerei Terlan

Kellerei Terlan was last winery we visited in Trentino - Alto Adige. It was a short, tasting room only visit.

Kellerei Terlan (GoogleAI)

Kellerei Terlan, also known as Cantina Terlano, is a highly-regarded winegrowers' cooperative in the Alto Adige (South Tyrol) region of northern Italy
. Founded in 1893, it is known for producing high-quality, long-aging white wines, particularly from the Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The winery also produces excellent red wines.

Location: The winery is in the village of Terlano, situated on the South Tyrolean Wine Road. The vineyards are on south-facing, terraced slopes with a volcanic, porphyry-rich soil that gives the wines their distinctive mineral character.

Wine production: About 70% of the winery's production is white wines, with the remaining 30% being red wines. All of their wines carry the DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) quality designation.

Wine styles: Terlaner Cuvée: This is the flagship white blend, featuring Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Rarity wines: These are special releases of mature white wines that have been aged on their fine lees for at least 10 years before being bottled. Single-variety whites: Notable white wines include Quarz Sauvignon Blanc, Vorberg Pinot Bianco Riserva, and Kreuth Chardonnay. Red wines: They produce noteworthy red wines such as Pinot Noir and Lagrein.

Cooperativism: As a winegrowers' cooperative, Kellerei Terlan has 143 member growers.

Winemaking philosophy: Terlan is renowned for its aging process, particularly the "sur lie" method, where white wines are aged on the yeast for years.

Kellerei Cantina Terlan (web site)

Founded in 1893, the Cantina Terlano winery is now one of the leading wine growers’ cooperatives in South Tyrol, with a current membership of 143 growers.  We and our members have long had a strong focus on quality. That has attracted praise and recognition on the Italian and international wine markets, and in spite of its relatively small size, Cantina Terlano is now well established in the world of wine.

Our modern winery produces 30 percent red and 70 percent white wines, all of them of DOC quality (Controlled Designation of Origin). Following the last upgrade and refurbishment in 2009, our cellars now include a total of 18,000 cubic meters of storage space, which ensures that the wines can develop undisturbed. On the outside, the new tract has a natural facing of red porphyry, the stone that gives the wines in the area their typical character. The roof is planted with vines so that it blends in completely with the surrounding countryside.

Our wines are marketed in two distinct quality lines: Selections and traditional line. An annual rarity is also produced, which only comes on the market after it has spent at least ten years maturing in our cellars. That makes it a fine symbol of our focus on longevity.

History

Sometimes renewal is needed to preserve tradition. That takes courage and the willingness to pull together. Fortunately, there was no lack of either when the Terlano Wine Growers’ Cooperative was established way back in 1893. What was a daring departure at the time has proved successful up to the present day. For wine lovers at least, Terlano wines have brought international fame to this small South Tyrolean village.

The foundation of the Cantina Terlano in 1893 took place at a time when agriculture was the mainstay of the regional economy. Apart from a few innovative winegrowers, however, who looked to the Rheingau region for new ideas and brought grape varieties from Germany and France to South Tyrol, agriculture under the domination of a few big landowners was backward.

The landlords were also the dominant factor in winemaking in the region. In order to liberate themselves from this domination, 24 Terlano winegrowers decided to join forces and founded the Cantina Terlano. Whereas red wines were more common in South Tyrol at the end of the 19th century, with a red to white ratio of 80:20, Terlano was already well known as a white wine area in 1893. Over the years this focus on white wines has been consolidated, and today the ratio of whites to reds at the Cantina Terlano is 70 percent white to 30 percent red.
